Perana Z-One - low res

Known for producing volume cars like the VW Golf and HUMMER H3, the South African town of Port Elizabeth is steadily building a nice repertoire of niche sports cars as well. The coastal town already makes Shelby Cobra replicas and Noble supercars for the world. Joining this elite two-some is the Perana Z-One of which a fair amount has been said lately.

Designed by Italian design consultancy and engineering house Zagato the Z-one packs a 6.2-litre LS3 Corvette V8 engine worth 330kW. All that power goes to the 345/30/19 Michelin rear tyres while the steering wheel keeps the 275/35/18 front tyres on the road. Control of the Z-One is left very much to the driver since ABS for the 325mm front brake discs and ESP systems are nowhere to be found. There is a limited slip differential (LSD) fitted though so take-off and some of the handling challenges are tackled in this way. The Z-One could prove quite a mission for the driver to contain it since Perana is imposing a 1,195kg maximum weight limit on it.

Ultimate production will be limited to 999 units and European pricing is expected to hover around the €50,000 region. But first it must be scrutinised by the educated public and critical world media at the 2009 Geneva International Motor Show next week. Soon after a European dealer network will be finalised and production will begin.

Zagato is launching an exciting World Premiere on the occasion of the 2009

Geneva Motor Show: the Perana Z-One (Zee-One).

The sports car Perana Z-One signals the first collaboration of the Milanese Coachbuilders with a South African Vehicle Manufacturer: Perana Performance Group.

The Perana project is the result of Zagato's 90 year-long expertise in constructing fully functional running concepts.

Virtual reality development has been integrated from inception, effectively eliminating the need for the traditional styling model and enabling the prototype to be completed in less than 4 months by the South African team.

Design Concept:

As the latest descendant of the Zagato sports car family, Z-one is designed with full blooded Zagato form language.

Reflecting this pure passion from this brand new sports car specialist, the proportion and volume of Z-one is even tighter than usual sports car styling, accentuated by couple of long and dynamic curves with keen edge which visually integrate some important design features like the air out-lets. Surfaces defined by those cutting edges are even more sculptured maintaining the modern Zagato line which we have been developing for a decade.

Initiative:

Following in the footsteps of Zagato's long tradition of masterfully designed cars, the Perana Z-One is no mere dream car, but a thoroughly practical and feasible production proposition that is expected to be available for sale to discerning European buyers by July 2009.

The Zagato Design Centre has styled the Perana Z-one to ensure it is built as a limited series production car. Sales will be limited to 999 cars per annum within Europe to assure exclusivity and to commemorate the 90 years of Zagato design.

Complying with Euro 4 emission legislation, this value proposition is expectedto be launched at the introductory price of under 50.000 Euros, before taxesan irresistible and highly competitive offer.

Technical Development:

From the innovative tubular and box section chassis to the exciting interior styling, the Perana Z-One is a concentration of advanced design and engineering. Fully certifiable for the road, this ultra high-performance, front engined sports coupé uses a powerful 6.2 litre V8 engine that drives the rear wheels. This genuine 2-seater coupé, enjoys the benefits of almost 50/50 weight distribution allowing for exhilarating, balanced and predictable road manners.

This is a great looking car but I'd rather see a more fuel efficeint small engine in this, bringing the costs down further. The interior is just fine and fitting with low volume production levels as this car is.

well....not talking about fitting....but design and huge mass of platics just dont do it for me

What small "more fuel efficient" engine will give you what the LS3 gives you? If mated to the Corvettes wonderful 6 speed manual, the Perana Z-One should get 18/26mpg with up to 450hp and 440lbft of torque while being as reliable as a VW Bug! This engine will also pass any countries EPA standards easily. Also, for the guy that said it looks like a TVR, lets hope it doesn't have the horrible fit & finish plus reliability problems that TVR's have! British junk!

I'm South African but i honestly have not been won over by this car. It's exterior and interior designs are a rip off from the italian designer. I would have rather used the South African that designed the McLaren SLR. It's an ok attempt at least.

The involvement of Zagato lends this project a credibility that is sorely needed when launching a car from scratch. And are you saying that Zagato has ripped off someone's designs? I see only Zagato's own styling cues in this.

Haven't posted yet hear but have been reading for ages. Seems to me you guys are getting a bit overly critical lately. First...at least it doesn't look like an Audi! Second...the interior may be simple and the exterior may have some styling cues from TVR and other italian beauties (not to mention a bit of maybe even a bit of Aston Martin), but let's get real...I'd pay 50K for that, over 40+K Corvette any day. GM has created anything inspiring from a design standpoint for the Vette since the Stingray forms left in the early 80's. The vette may be a engineering marvel for GM, but the design has been a snooze for too long. And if you really want to talk amateurish interiors...take another look at the Maxximus G-Force...$3 mil for that crap...gimme a break!

lol, 50k? that gotta be a joke. its not enough to make it seem like a seriously well engineered car, but too much for something to mess around with like a lotus elise. and the corvette engine is sooo cliche.
