BMW 3-Series GT To Debut in Frankfurt?

Rumors are swirling around the Internet that a new BMW 3 Series GT Concept will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. Many automakers are looking for new ways to attract customers. BMW has been doing this by creating cars to fill gaps in the marketplace.

It is no surprise then that BMW would look for an additional model to add to their 3 Series lineup. The 3 Series represents a large portion of worldwide BMW sales. Its creation in the 1970s doubled worldwide sales.

BMW will be paying very strict attention to the debut of the 5 Series GT, with the hope that it gets a similarly positive reaction as the release of the X5 ten years ago. In the same way that the X5 spawned a new line of vehicles for BMW, the 5er GT could lead to both a 3 Series GT and a 1 Series GT.

The 5er GT was created to appeal to older customers who want a less sporting car, but do not want the ride height of the X6. Speculation says that a 3er GT wiill appeal to those wanting the performance of BMW's most popular car, the versatility of a hatchback, and a lower ride height than the X3. Such customers could be weekend athletes and couples with one or two children.

Supposedly called the Progressive Activity Coupe, or the V3, the rear-wheel-drive 3er GT would likely have a higher roofline than the 3 Series wagon, a longer wheelbase, and a nice amount of cabin space. All-wheel-drive would be an option, and a hybrid version is also possible.

All this speculation really boils down to the reception of the BMW 5 Series GT at Geneva. A strong debut signaling demand for the first-generation crossover could lead to a whole new series from BMW. If that's the case, we just might see a BMW 3 Series GT concept by the end of the year.

so they want a less sporty car which has a hatchback and a big boot but without the ride height of an SUV... that would be the 3-Series Touring then, surely?

OMG BMW stop this nonsense! A 1 Series GT? For people who needs a versality of a hatckback, but beeing less sporty than the actual hatchback, yet lower than the X1, yet higher than the actual 1 series...bla bla bla? This is so sick !

All BMW cars (minus the 5 series) have a long hood, small cabin, and small trunk lid. To me the cars look unbalanced and personify a phallic symbol. The 3GT does less so and appears more like a utility wagon-which is an improvement.

The front airdams look like the TT RS. BMWs are slipping with their perfect dynamics :) . Stop this nonsense. Just one more ultimate machine

My guess is it'll never happen, the front intakes look like they came off the genesis coupe. Lower spoiler is ideas taken from the Audi Line and the headlights do not fit with any of the current models. I say thank goodness that it's just a rendering

I think it sucks..! I already miss Chris Bangle (RESPECT)... Adrian van Hooydonk reminds me of a fashion designer rather than what he is now and I don't like his attitude.

Exactly! Like Giugiaro. "oh...suit you sir!" - type of the guys both.

Yet I don't think this is a creation of Adrian van Hooydonk as a design chief, but rather Bangle's hands are behind it... Adrian's own design signature will be available on the market in a few years from now... it's not that easy to design and then to produce even a prototype. The time since he took Bangle's place was too short so I don't think this beemer is his child.

Send all the fashionistas and marketing poufs to Vogue magazine. Bring back SERIOUS engineers and SERIOUS driving machines. You don't like "sport?" You want something "softer?" You want your seat to be higher? Then buy a friggin Buick, for crying out loud! 60-year-old men who have trouble getting down into a sports car have flocked to Buick for centuries (and for their choice of a Century, Regal, LaCrosse...). I tolerated the presence of X3s, X5s, and X6s because BMW produced Z3s, Z4s, M3s, M5s, and great "everday" cars like the 3er and 5er sedans and touring. It seems they have been getting away from their "core" products and spending too much R&D funds on the frivolous fringe products without advancing the core. WAKE UP before it's too late and the global recession KILLS you, BMW!

Like it or not, at least this has character vs. the uqiquitous and overly-conservative standard 3-series.

That's the whole point, we don't like it - we won't buy it..! I prefer to stay with my current Z4si roadster...

Perhaps BMW could spend some of those R&D funds on engineering a manual transmission that can handle the torque of their excellent 3-litre biturbo diesel. Then they could market that engine with a manual transmission and M-Sport package to those of us drivers who crave sporting BMW performance and excellent efficiency. THAT would be worth the effort!

New idea BMW: how about a diesel estate convertible 4x4 4 seater Z4 for those who want to seat as in a roadster, yet they don't want to lack the practicality and economy of an estate, yet they still want to have the open top, but without the bulky look, and they also need all-terain abilities, yet without the high seating position of an x3 ? Now that's a great idea!

Yeah - it will look like the chop-top, doorless Plymouth Volare station wagons in "Fantasy Island." It will have "rich, Corinthian leather," and be chauffered by a dwarf to make it look bigger!

LOL Hell yeah... I guess BMW will end up selling roller skates this way... you know, for those enviromental conscious consumers who want sporty transportation with and individual character, an open air experience and really really low ride height.

I'd buy it ONLY if I get a free pair of lesbian lapdancers. Otherwise it's not the car for me, my children, grandchildren etc. I'll stick with my 1996 3-Series Coupe.

I wouldnt buy this if I were an athlete or even had 2 kids. I'd just go ahead and buy a normal 325i instead. BMW is just wasting time and burning money, that too during the worst recession the industry has ever seen. Repsect to Chris Bangle, and God save Bayerische Motoren from turning into SAAB.

...or buy that Bangled 5-series 530i before its not too late to have a marvelously designed and fabricated car.
