According to a report from Motor Trend, GM is planning to reintroduce the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 some time in the near future but the company's current financial crisis has pushed the launch of the new model to the backburner.
With memories of the company getting an earful over taking corporate jets to testify before Congress asking for a bailout, GM is playing it safe with their financial reserves and focusing more on high volume fuel-misers instead of all out performance cars. While the move may provoke sadness from the Camaro faithful, the reasons are pretty obvious as the Z/28 would be expensive, low volume, and only return about 13 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. Not exactly the best model to introduce when you're asking Congress for billions of dollars and promising to make low emission fuel-efficient vehicles in return for their investment.
Power will come from the Cadillac CTS-V's 6.2-liter LSA supercharged V8 engine which cranks out an insane 556 hp and 551 lb-ft of torque. In the Camaro that should translate into a 0-60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds and a top speed somewhere in the neighborhood of 193 mph. As with the CTS-V, expect the new Z/28 to be offered with both manual and automatic transmissions.
