In spite of all the questions that surround Tesla's future and production of their upcoming model S sedan, the company has issued a response in the form of a new teaser image and an announcement that the car will be officially unveiled on March 26.

The new image shows a profile view of the electric sedan and although we can't gather a full grasp of how the vehicle will look when it debuts, it is clear that the model has an extremely aerodynamic shape and flush mounted headlights. Designed as a five door hatchback, the model S should offer a highly functional interior despite its somewhat small wheelbase.

Scheduled to go on sale by 2011, the model S will carry a base price of $57,499 and Tesla is targeting an annual output of 20,000 units. It will be a pure electric vehicle and is expected to be able travel up to 225 miles on a single battery charge. When the sedan hits the market it will face stiff competition from several gasoline electric hybrids that cost significantly less including the Chevrolet Volt, Honda Insight, and the redesigned Toyota Prius. However the biggest competitor for the model S will probably turn out to be Fisker's Karma sedan which will offer sexy styling and a $87,900 price tag.

Good observation, the whole Tesla company and most EV schemes is "ahead of themselves".

What's so 'ahead of themselves' about this? There is clearly a huge demand for EV's, and at this current stage proper funding is crucial. I just hope Elon Musk isn't blowing smoke up everyone's arse.

EVs will never catch on until they develop a recharge system as quick as filling up at a gas station. Who wants to recharge a car for 8-10hours every night? Your electric bill will TRIPLE and in the end, it would be cheaper to have a gasoline car. Not to mention your insurance bill will be much higher if you have a collision deduction, since the technology is expensive and a crash most likely will result in totalling the vehicle.
