Nissan's quirky cube has finally arrived on U.S. shores. The third generation of the avant-garde commuter goes on sale in early May, and the manufacturer unveiled a special edition model and announced pricing at the Chicago Auto Show today.
The cube hits the streets with an MSRP of $13,990 for the cube 1.8, the entry-level, manual transmission-equipped model.
The cube will be available in four trim levels: cube 1.8, cube 1.8 S, cube 1.8 SL and cube 1.8 Krom (which rhymes with "chrome," not with Conan the Barbarian's exclamation). Comparisons to the Scion xB are inevitable given the cube's squared-off looks and aggressively quirky styling. Nissan will likely court many Scion fans with the cube's personalization program, which offers over forty accessories to customize the vehicle, including twenty-color interior mood lighting, shag carpet interior inserts, body kits and larger wheels.
Box-like asymmetrical styling makes the cube stand out as well as being useful. Cool design accents like the rounded windows, "water drop" interior accents and a refrigerator-style rear door help to make the car's large interior into a "lounge" environment that set it apart from the rest of the herd.
The cube 1.8 Krom has been developed by Nissan's new Specialty Vehicles Group, and stands out with exclusive interior and exterior modifications. A unique three-bar chrome grille and unique fascias help to set it apart from the rest of the already distinctive cube lineup. On the interior the Krom gets unique woven seat cloth, a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, an iPod interface and a Rockford Fosgate sound system complete with subwoofer.
Power is provided by a frugal 122-horsepower 1.8 liter four-cylinder, with a choice of six-speed manual or continuously variable transmissions. Nissan expects EPA fuel economy numbers in the 30 mpg range.

Inside and out, the new Nissan cube offers an inspiring canvas for personalization. A centerpiece of the new cube’s appeal is its “social space” interior that offers room for five in a lounge-like comfort. Along with its open occupant space, “floating meter pod” driver’s area and “lounge sofa” style sliding and reclining rear bench seat, the cube interior is available with a long list of innovative accessories.
