Mercedes E-Class Cabrio Soft Top Spy

Hard- and soft-top convertibles to be offered

The next-generation Mercedes E-Class convertible has been spied out in the world, as the car is prepared for its expected introduction in September. With most of its camouflage stripped away, the soft-top's new lines are visible. The E-Class convertible exhibits the angular yet muscular lines of the new coupe, which should debut at the Geneva show in March and go on sale in early 2010.

A retractable hardtop is expected as seen in previous spy photos, but this is the first time we've seen a soft fabric top as well. This car appears to be wearing a six-spoke alloy wheel of a different design than the coupes spied previously. There is no official word yet on powertrains, but expect similar offerings to the rest of the line up. The E-Class isn't known for big surprises, after all. Mercedes' familiar 3.5 V6, 5.4 V8 and 6.2 AMG V8 are the most likely candidates. Given the popularity and friendly nature of diesels, we expect to see a CDI or BlueTec-equipped E-Class convertible as well.

The new E-Class convertible is expected to make its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this fall.

I think it looks nice with a soft top, it suits the car. I think that a heavy hardtop would ruin it though.

I think the same, retractable hard tops just don't look good. Great idea from MB to give a choice.

i agree, although they do have their merits. maybe in a few years time they'll be this and light enough to work well. its genius to offer both, they can rival audi's softop A5 and bmw's hard topped 3 series now. go MB!

I like the coupe far more than the ragtop. For some reason the rear of the car is the stickiest point for me - it reminds me of an early 90's Toyota Paseo.

Yeh, I agree, "clk" never did make much sense to me. I can't wait for it to come out, also Im glad it has a soft top. Normally I prefer the coupe to the convertible, but I really like this one.

I find it has something from the Toyota Solara... It's for 40 yrs and over.

Hideous. Really really bad. Merc lost the plot after the 1998-2003 CLK430 - that was a gorgeous car.

BTW, the coupe is ugly too. Looks like a Toyota. AT least they've got the badging right now, replacing the silly CLK with the E class. Nothing like the W124 E-class coupe/cabrio though.
