Eagle-eyed spotters near GM's testing facilities in Germany have caught the new Opel/Vauxhall Astra testing without camouflage. Scheduled to go on sale at the end of this year, the new Astra is currently in testing. The vehicle in the photos is a styling prototype, but clearly shows the Astra's new lines. The window treatments and rear window are visible in the photos, sections of the car that have been heavily disguised in previously captured test mules.

The updated Astra is expected to be somewhat more sophisticated than the current model, with refined suspension manners and more upscale appointments inside.

Underneath the skin, we know that the new Astra rides on GM's all-new Delta platform, which is shared with the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze and will be used on mid-size cars like the Chevy Volt and Vauxhall Ampera. A full line of gas and diesel engines is expected, and a hybrid version with the second generation of GM's mild hybrid system on board. The new Astra's interior shows influence from the larger Insignia in its three-gauge instrument panel and wraparound dash trim.

am i the only one that thinks that the current Astra looks fantastic and doesn't need messing with? the Insignia is not a very good looking car imho, and making the Astra look similar is a real shame

I've never got on with the front -- theheadlights look too much like there were an old deflector lens that they tried to convert to something more modern.

Looking forward to this refresh as its in a tough segment.

Looks really classy. Even more so than the new Golf dare I say?

so far as I can see, it looks way better than the current 5 door Astra. I can't wait to see what the Sporthatch looks like. Not to say the current 5 door is ugly, but this is more steamlined. I just hope the 3 door isn't messed up.

Deja vu: same Opel styling, 3 sizes. Now Insignia-based.

Yawn.

In my opinion it's the best looking kompakt/the interior could be better(I agree it's still not a premium product)but it's a better option than to buy a more expensive golf VI"

Looks much more modern than the Golf, and way more elegant than the Megane. Only new Focus have a chance to be a threat for it.

Ok, I like it. Too similar to Insignia, but I forgive you.

Look at the Opel, Megane is just a foreseen and so premeditated coincidence. Or was it a Kia Ceed or that i30?

Looks good. But of those shapes you most probably get tired of really fast. Nothing compares to the classy design of the current Golf generation in my point of view!

Agree. Mk VI is very nice and oh', it is ironic, Golf is quit original and so quit alone.
