Spied photos of the Porsche 911 Coupe and Cabriolet model code named 998 have been published before. These images here offer a new possibility after our spies went over and looked closer at the car's roof. From what they saw it seems Porsche is now testing a Targa version of the 998 911. Targa models traditionally have a removable or retractable glass roof. The current 911 Targa is only available as a 4WD but this option is heavier and consumes more fuel than the standard Carrera. Therefore with the emphasis towards fuel efficiency a rear-wheel-drive version could be made available as well in addition to the 4WD according to sources.

The new 998 will feature Porsche's new 7-speed PDK double-clutch as well as a six-speed manual transmission. Sources also claim a 3.0-litre mill is a distinct feature on the lineup but there is no confirmation on whether this engine will be naturally aspirated, turbocharged or supercharged in the same way that Audi has done with their new A6/ S4/ S5 ranges.

New raised headlights on the 998 are not just for styling differentiation but they are also a safety requirement. They are escorted by LED lights. The side mirrors are attached to the doors again and rear lights should similarly feature LED technology. The next Porsche 911 range goes on sale in 2011.

The roof line looks much lower and the car seems longer. The side mirrors attached to the door are reminiscent of the 1995-98 model year (the best looking model IMHO).

So many possibilities looking at this picture. It could be just a regular carrera with a fixed glass roof like the current bmw 6 series; or it can really be a targa, with two sliding glass panels for a larger opening. If this is indeed the targa, then its good news as the chassis would now be much stiffer as the roof rails are now part of the car instead of just being integrated into a convertible body
