Although the automotive industry took one of its worst beatings in history last year, Mercedes-Benz performance division AMG has posted its best sales record yet.

AMG global sales were 24,200 for 2008, an increase of 19 percent over the previous year's 20,300.

The largest market for AMG was the United States, which accounted for 38 percent of all sales. The German market is AMG's second largest, accounting for 13 percent of total sales and where sales were up 34 percent over 2007.

AMG delivered 8,100 of the C 63 AMG and 3,050 of the SL 63 AMG.

Successful for the performance division was also AMG's sports package offering on certain vehicles, which increased its sales by 75 percent. AMG also had twice as many registrations to its AMG Driving Academy as in 2007, the year in which it was founded.

In light of its success, AMG has committed itself to improving the fuel economy of its vehicles by 30 percent by 2012. AMG cars already meet the EU-5 standards and will make the EU-6 standards earlier than 2014 when they come into effect. AMG will be making use of lightweight materials, better engine management and regulation of water and oil pumps, and introducing direct-injection and stop-start technology in all its models in 2010.

Division head Volker Mornhinweg, recently declared the "the horsepower war is over." AMG will now be boosting performance mostly through new technologies that improve efficiency.

Press Release (Click to expand)

Best year ever: 2008 - Record sales for Mercedes-AMG GmbH

* 24,200 AMG high-performance vehicles delivered worldwide
* Germany is second-strongest market with 34 per cent growth
* 73 per cent increase for AMG sports package

Mercedes-AMG GmbH is celebrating the most successful year in its company history. AMG, the performance brand within Mercedes-Benz Cars, succeeded in increasing unit sales worldwide by 19 per cent, selling 24,200 vehicles (previous year 20,300) and bucking the market trend in extremely difficult conditions. As in previous years, the USA was the strongest market for AMG with a share of 38 per cent of total sales. Germany came in second place (13 per cent), followed by Japan (8 per cent). The German market has developed very positively with a clear increase of 34 per cent compared with the previous year. The greatest growth markets of 2008 include amongst others China and Brazil with rates of increase of 260 per cent and 565 per cent respectively. With these figures AMG confirms its leading position amongst high-performance vehicle brands and at the same time further expands its market share in the high-performance segment.

The C 63 AMG made a considerable contribution to the success of 2008 with 8100 vehicles delivered. The C 63 AMG, available as a saloon and as an estate, is thereby the most successful AMG automobile of all time. The new SL 63 AMG also developed positively, with 3,050 enthusiastic purchasers in 2008.

In addition, a further chapter of the Black Series success story was relayed to the world with the SL 65 AMG Black Series, limited to 350 units - and enchanted the media and demanding AMG customers alike.

Successful: AMG sports package and AMG Driving Academy

The AMG sports package also made a positive contribution to the year's success. The striking sporty equipment packages are available for numerous Mercedes lines and were sought after by more customers than ever in 2008; the increase over 2007 amounted to 73 per cent.

The AMG Driving Academy, founded in 2007, registered twice as many applications as in 2007. The strength of demand for high-class racing circuit training and events has led AMG to undertake a considerable expansion of the AMG Driving Academy options for 2009.

Individual customer attention and first class customer care also played a crucial role in AMG's continually increasing success. Hence AMG is to establish 175 new AMG Performance Centers worldwide by the end of next year: its engagement in intensifying customer relations now covers 15 countries in total.

Environmentally compatible vehicle development initiatives

In addition to its passion for high-performance sports vehicles, Mercedes-AMG GmbH is also committed to social responsibility and is intensifying its engagement in the development of environmentally compatible vehicles. AMG is already "Best in Class" amongst its performance car subsidiary and sporting brand competitors in the field of consumption. All AMG vehicles will surpass the EU-5 standards which come into force from 2009 and also the EU-6 standards which will apply from 2014. To reduce consumption, AMG is shortly to introduce efficiency-increasing engine-generator management as well as regulated oil and water pumps. From 2010 AMG will equip its vehicles with direct petrol injection and with start-stop function. Through constantly increasing efficiency, AMG will from 2012 achieve a reduction in consumption of 30 per cent in comparison to present levels.

AMG was founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher and is considered to be a pioneer in the field of motor sport and refinement. The cooperation contract agreed with Daimler-Benz AG in 1990 was followed in 1999 by gradual integration into the then DaimlerChrysler AG. On 1 January 2005 DaimlerChrysler AG took 100 per cent of the shares. Today Mercedes-AMG GmbH is a vehicle manufacturer and AMG is the performance brand within Mercedes-Benz Cars. The subsidiary firm of Daimler AG is uniquely specialised in the field of high-performance vehicles and, with its sporty saloons, coupés, cabriolets, roadsters, SUVs and specially produced one-off vehicles, offers a product portfolio which leaves no customer wish unfulfilled. Mercedes-AMG possesses overall responsibility for design, aerodynamics and interior as well as drive system, engine, chassis, brakes and electronics, and ultimately for the final release of the AMG complete vehicle. In addition, marketing and sales-related aspects are handled independently.

35000 Corvettes, 4000ish Vipers, 8583 GT500's in 2008. You might find this link of interest... then again... I bet not even an organization as important as SAE could change your mind... http://www.sae.org/automag/bestcar/10.htm

I knew that comment would bring out the Limon. I know the specs on the vette and S500. I would be curious Joe to see how many of them were actually registered with the DMV or MTO, dealer buys shouldn't count. I find it hard to believe that they sold 4000 vipers, last summer i walked into the biggest Dodge dealer in the GTA and they had two vipers and were trying to con me into buying one by offering me 40k off the sticker price.

Man, you're dense. Did the article name "best engineered car of the 20th century" honestly do nothing in your head? Or are you just not wanting to admit anything that might seem positive about an American company. Haha, I also love the fact that you say they were trying to "con you into buying" a viper. That reminds me of last time I walked into a Porsche dealership to buy some parts and they tried to "con" me into buying a $120,000 car with carpet rear seats ;)

ok, i do appreciate the fact that AMG engines are hand built, and i am a big fan of mercedes and AMG, but building 24,200 engines in 12 months by hand is too much to sallow..

February 5, 2009 1:21 PM
reading their website tells me they can built around one hundred engines a day, thus 250 working days account for around 25000 engines per year! but 34% in Germany alone!....awesome!

The AMG series were not the best selling in 2008, just posted the best increase. The C63 AMG is the main reason for the huge increase. AMG did not offer an entry level car in 2007. The least expensive AMG in 2007 was the ML63 AMG or the CLK63 AMG, both around $90k-$95k USD. In 2008 the C63 came out at $65k loaded.

65k yes...but far from loaded. With all the optional extras it gets up to 95-100k...

No AMG model in the present line-up has a manual transmission. This does not make sense. BMW and Audi offer manual transmissions on their M and S cars.

February 5, 2009 1:03 AM
Not all Ms and S class come with manual.

joshg_5
February 5, 2009 1:21 AM
That's because AMG has developed a transmission that is far faster and more efficient than that of any manual.

Unfortunate they don't offer one for the driving enthusiast, yes. But on the track, it's simply better...

True, not all S, RS and M cars come with manual transmissions but at least Audi and BMW have the option of a manual transmission on their cars. I've heard that for some reason, it is nearly impossible to get a good resale value on a manual Mercedes and the manuals come on the cheapest of the brand's models only such as the entry level C, SLK and E. There is a reason that companies like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche and Audi offer manual transmissions on many of their cars; it's not all about the rapid shifts or convenience, but more about the feeling of control, tradition and pure driving that constitues the appeal of these stick-shift performance vehicles. I would've liked to see Mercedes put some manuals into all levels of their range, but I guess the demand is not sufficient.

Absolutely right,

In Europe one is able to find 2.0L Turbo CLK's and such. Quite a different market...

In addition to your comments on lack of demand for a manual is that the costs would be so much higher to develop, produce and distribute manuals amongst all or some Mercedes, more specifically AMG's.

I will admit however, that I would think twice about buying an AMG because of the inability to have a manual. This would definitely raise my consideration towards an RS or M regarding a manual transmission as I love actually driving the car, not being driven.

If you take into account that 24,200 is rounded, ///M and ///AMG sold effectively exactly the same number of cars (///M 24,186, ///AMG rounded to 24,200). Goes to show just how even these two in-house marques are. Some of the very few proper rivals in motoring.

But ///M is better. ;)

Readed the same about M-power from Bmw, seems people that have money don't buy sportcars anymore(porsche, ferrari, lambo) but instead they go for the M or the AMG badge...

Does anyone know how much Audi sold of the RS cars? Ok to maybe give them a chance to rival BMW and Merc throw in the S cars as well seeing that they said they outsold both Merc and BMW in Germany.
