Mazda has released details of two Mazda3 variants which will be taking their first public bows at the Geneva motor show next month.

First up is the Mazda3 i-stop. The i-stop features Mazda's new stop-start technology and is coupled with the MZR 2.0 DISI, a direct injection engine producing 150 hp and 138 lb·ft (187Nm) of torque. Together the two technologies create a 12 percent improvement in fuel economy for the Mazda3 over the previous 2.0 liter version.

Next up is the Mazda3 MPS, the performance variant of the Mazda3 which comes with the MZR 2.3 liter DISI turbocharged engine with 260 hp and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of cranking power. The DISI stands for Direct Injection Spark Ignition. Direct injection technology allows for both improved performance and economy.

Both variants are scheduled to go on sale in Europe shortly after their Geneva debut. The Mazda3 will compete in Europe's largest and most competitive car segment, going up against the likes of the VW Golf, Opel Astra and the Renault Megane.

All-new Mazda3 i-stop, Mazda3 MPS to Premiere at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show

Mazda Motor Corporation will debut two new models of the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan) product range at the 2009 Geneva International Motor Show from March 3 through 15, 2009. The world premiere of the Mazda3 with i-stop, Mazda's advanced fuel-saving start-stop system, will be shared with the all-new Mazda3 MPS, Mazda3's high performance flagship model. The Mazda3 MPS (Mazdaspeed Axela) now features improved fuel economy and emissions that satisfy Euro Stage 5.

Mazda3 i-stop

The Mazda3 is one of Mazda's core products, with more than two million units of the first generation produced. The design of the new model has a bolder and more dynamic stance; it is agile and confidence-inspiring, enhancing the sense of oneness between the driver and car. It also has high environmental and safety performance levels, exemplifying Mazda's Sustainable Zoom-Zoom long-term vision to provide cars that are eco-friendly and safe while still being fun to drive.

The Mazda3 with i-stop embodies Sustainable Zoom-Zoom and adds a new eco-friendly option to the lineup. It features the i-stop system in combination with the MZR 2.0 DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engine. Together, these two Mazda proprietary technologies help the new model achieve approximately 12 percent lower fuel consumption (urban cycle) than the current European Mazda3. By providing great driving performance as well as top-class fuel economy, the Mazda3 with i-stop is a different type of eco-car that will exceed customer expectations.

Mazda3 MPS

The Mazda3 MPS sport compact pushes Mazda design further and its exciting driving performance perfectly represents Mazda's Zoom-Zoom spirit. Carrying forward the MZR 2.3 DISI Turbo engine, Mazda3 MPS builds on the popularity and recognition of the previous model. It evolves the driving experience to an entirely new level of quality and pleasure with its emotional design and exhilarating performance.

The all-new Mazda3 Program Manager, Yoshiyuki Maeda, says, "These two models add extra value to an all-new Mazda3 lineup that has already shown strong appeal. The new Mazda3 series takes a significant step ahead in both the realms of driving performance and environmental technology to lead the way toward a new generation of motoring."

I reckon it divides opinion - I hate that smile already. How can you take a car seriously, particularly the MPS version, when you have such a ridiculous, cartoon grin of the front?

lols you got a point there hahhahaha but maybe it's to keep people guessing...?

guy at the red lights: "HAHA look at that! it's a clown car! Let's race it!!" (lights turn green) guy at the red (now green) lights: "HOLY S***!!"

I prefer NEITHER smile. What's wrong with a good old fashioned scowl?!

AHHH!!!! is it AWD ?!?!?!?!

I NEED TO KNOW! I like it, but could be a little more aggressive looking. I'm sure some independents will make it look really good.

Unfortunately, all it looks like they did is make the grille and bonnet bigger. Not a huge improvement IMO if not AWD. Personally I don't consider 10% fuel economy a revolution...

NOOOOOO!!!! what a disappointment... Another potential great (not that it's still great, just not as amazing as it could be), lost to FWD syndrome.

wildly understeering into a tree or traffic light? yes but you have to admit, you can't get cheaper straight line performance than this hahahahaha...at least, i don't think so? how much is that insane vauxhall?

I like the mps just as much as the next person but if we are going with just performance the Cobalt SS is no joke. I don't like the grin and it should have a scowl for something that is bred to eat unsuspecting WRX's. loose the hoodscoop because that is what made it stand out from the Subaru's.

I honestly don't mind the smile. Given this car's specs, I'm sure people will spend a lot more time looking at the rear end.
