i'm guessing the Prius' design is based more upon what will make it fuel efficient rather than what would make it look good. i can't see any other plausible reason why it's so ugly

Actually, its design is not meant to make it more handsome, sexy or fuel efficient. It's just meant to say "hey, that's me making a HUGE sacrifice, driving this stupid car, all to save our little green planet... just like brangelina!"

Prius already gets an astounding 50 mpg......
So do a lot of cars....hardly "astounding".....but good luck on them trying to do better. Personally I just wish they'd make a sporty car that would actually be desirable to own.
RIP Toyota as a sporty car maker

It will be many years before Toyota makes another sporty car. Sporty cars, scratch that, cheap sporty cars will always suffer more abuse then any other car on the market. That abuse leads to things breaking, and the last thing toyota wants is to ruin it's "reliable" reputation... it's also why they charge bundles when you try to option your car out...

The reason the Prius is so ugly is because the "chief of design" had to babysit his 2yo son he gave the kid some paper & crayons to play with and hey presto the kid came up with the Prius.

prius = ugly, but it is even worse in a lower spec model , so people if you are going to buy a pruis buy a high spec one. (take the pictures for example the silver one looks better with larger rims than the blue one with small rims)

They need to bring back whoever designed the last generation Supra and the original Lexus SC. Those are two of the best looking cars to come from Japan. Period.

what's wrong with a diesel? VW polo diesel does better than the prius in term of mileage, is environmentally friendlier to make AND costs alot less than this piece of garbage.
Hell here in australia, for the price of a brand new prius, you can get 2nd hand polo diesel AND 2nd hand R34 Skyline.
There, you can go fast on your weekends AND save the planet on your drive to work.
