Britain's Autoweek has rebuked stories that claim that Jaguar is working on a 200mph-plus supercar in the mould of the old XJ220. According to AutoWeek, these claims are nothing more than a pie in the sky that will probably never be reached. Instead Jaguar is said to be readying a smaller sports car to be badged the XE.

We know the name XE will feature in Jaguar's future plans because it was patented as C-XE along with C-XJ. Normally the people running the British luxury brand prefix the ultimate car's name with a C when the car first debuts in public as a concept. The 2007 C-XF Concept for instance later became the production XF. Pictures used are those of a rendered XF-based roadster from the WCF files.

The boss of Tata Motors which owns Jaguar, has said that he likes the idea of an entry-level sports car which would afford first-time buyers the opportunity of considering a Jaguar in the mid-end sports segment. The car under discussion would compete in the same league as the Audi TT, BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK instead of with a Mazda MX-5 or a Pontiac Solstice. It would hedge the brand against a global credit crunch that in all probability would stifle sales of the bigger, more expensive XK range. Still on the XK, it's said that a 275hp (205kW) turbo diesel version is being prepared for a friendly rivalry with the BMW 635d.

i wonder what a baby Jag would do for their sales. smaller cars like the TT and SLK i normally associate with younger people, and as much as i love the XF i still see it being driven by 40-somethings rather than 20- and 30-somethings that a baby Jag would be targeting. i think instead making a car that can truly compete with the C-Class, 3 Series and A4 would be a better use of Jag's money

You've never saw the sales figures for the X-Type then?

I myself am a young educated man, living in a big cosmopolitan city, shopping for premium brands - the specific target for the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Cadillac, Volvo and others. And though I really like Jaguar, there is nothing in its line up actually appealing for me. So yes, I guess there is space for a small sports car. And yes, there is space for a much needed X Type replacement.

Do you know what I'd really love? An A5/CLK rival from Jaguar. A sexy entry level coupe, maybe even a tad smaller in size, but with a big engine, handsome styling and a strikingly beautiful interior.

we all know that is SO autoweek... they come up with any given "rumor", always about a new stunning model from british carmakers... and then reveal at some point that the plans were "sadly cancelled".

i'm an autoweek reader too, but sometimes they should just focus on, you know, real news. they are not an independent blog like wcf, after all.

by the way: also sad to notice that they sometimes seem to work for ford. you know, just the way those folks at car and driver work for honda and bmw.

OK, calm down! First of all, Britain's AutoExpress first revealed "plans" for a Jaguar supercar. Alas, they are full of crap and will publish anything to outsell Autocar on the shelves -- it was all piffle. Autoweek, who I have never heard of but they don't sound British, are now debunking the idea which, obviously, I agree with.

And it's an interesting note about Jaguar trying to appeal to younger customers because, i these testing times, are younger buyers actually wealthy enough to afford a Jaguary anyway I wonder...?

I'm with sub39h. They should redo the X-Type to compete with the 3series, Lexus IS, and other brands in that segment for around 30k and that would really boost their sales that is if they make something that is more class and more performance and better pricing with rear wheel drive or the previous AWD set up they had on the X-Type before. then they could supercharge it and make it and X-TypeR. LOL but they probably won't

AR Mito is entry level ride for entry level driver before you will buy a Chrysler 300 or an oversized SUV and become so a pro. BMW 1 series ( incl. coupe) have no any independent value as well before you do not get over it and will buy an X6 or 7 series? So will be with Jag too. By a Daimler right away or you will be on entry level for years.
