New front wings increase crash risk - Kubica

New front wings increase crash risk - Kubica
BMW F1.09

Robert Kubica is concerned that F1's new generation front wings could lead to huge accidents in 2009.

The increased risk of damaged wings on the wheel-to-wheel run to the first corner has already been raised, as the cars this year feature wings that are as wide as the front wheels.

But Kubica, who had a massive accident in Montreal in 2007 due to contact and a front wing collapsing under his BMW-Sauber, thinks the danger of high speed crashes is also dramatically heightened due to the new aerodynamic rules that are designed to promote overtaking.

The Pole also said Luciano Burti's scary crash at Spa-Francorchamps in 2001 was caused by front wing damage.

"With this huge front wing, which is as wide as the tyres, we have to be really careful," he said.

"It is huge and could easily go under the car," Kubica, 24, warned.

Each sport has it's risks and the to take away the risk element would make it boring. These cars are already so safe compared to older F1 cars.

You remember the EXTREMELY volatile crash Kubica was in ? It was almost dangerous and some expected him to be dead. There should be a limit to how far things are pushed before a Racers life is placed in danger.

Oh shut up about the new look, it doesn't look that bad at all, really. Go look at some of the older, crazier F1 cars then come and comment. I actually think I like the new look, the old car looks foreign now when compared, somehow.

I could care less what the car looks like as long as it adds to the functionality of the car F1 engineers are no slouches... they know what they're doing Having said that the new front wings do look very susceptible to collision and only the drivers can be the judges if this "improvement" is dangerous

Last years model was so much better looking, and it would probably be quicker too.

Kubica has seen the worst of crashes, we should respect and think about what he says. I still remember the crash.
