These are the first images of an uncloaked Peugeot 408 sedan lurking in the shadows showing a sleek sporty profile with large split 5-spoke rims. The 408 will replace the Peugeot 407 which was launched in 2004 with several body variants such as a station wagon, a two-door coupe and a sedan.

From what we can see the 408 looks production ready, begging the possibility of a Geneva Motor Show debut in March. On the other hand it would be a surprise to see an all-new model since the 407 just received a minor facelift in 2008.

Regardless, the current 407 range has an assortment of engines ranging from a 114hp (85kW) 1.8-litre petrol to 1.6 HDi turbo diesels to the 2.7 HDi V6 making 201hp (150kW) and a sweet 440Nm of torque.

Peugeot could be preparing for a busy year. Recently the French manufacturer unveiled the new 3008 CrossOver while a 7-seater variant of the 3008 is soon to follow.

I can only hope this is nowhere near the real deal. It just have one of the worst looking front ends Ive ever saw on a car. It looks like some home made replica of the 407, which also isn't very pretty for me. I miss the old 406 and 405, they were great. Now Pug is only going worse and worse with every single new model.

that is really ugly, it is worse than the current one. Its too flat and angular to be a Peugeot... I just hope that they dont make it nose heavy like they have done on the current one becuase it ruins the profile view

I imagin Peugeot stylists think they've produced a poor man's Quattroporte (much like they thought the 406 Coupe was a poor man's Ferrari 456).

Are the Europeans getting shrinkaged and smaller in size? Because even the current one does not have enough room and this seems to be more smashed downwards on the roof.

It's hard to tell that is the same company that brought us such beautiful, fun cars as the 205, the 306 and even the 206. Peugeot's design is becoming more and more of a cartoon version of itself, and that is certainly not a good thing.

The new 408's dynamic styling is very impressive, and I expect good ergonomics and spacious inside. If such lambent, artistic style is combined with ample space,it would be intrinsic beauty. Frankly speaking, current 407 Peugeot is somewhat cumbersome and its concept is off the mark. Her visibility is below average, owing to steep A-pillars,while elephantine body contributes little to inner and luggage space. Thus her design policy is no true beauty, just a peripheral, commercial one. After all,the current Peugeot 407 is largely different animal compared with her ancestors,404 and 504. Albeit her flexible engines and well-engineered suspensions are still up to Peugeot's good tradition, her design cues are dynamic yet too market oriented,in my remark. I do expect the debut of Peugeot 408,as the trigger of new era for European premium-midsize(D-segment)!
