In Japan the automotive industry has had it fair share of turmoil recently just like everybody else. But there is hope in the mid-term as exciting new products paticularly for enthusiasts lie on the horizon.

Firstly Nissan is said to be planning two new body types based on the highly successful GT-R high performance sports car. By the year 2011 a four-door Infiniti-badged ‘GT-R' will be on the market. So will an SUV, also based on the GT-R platform.

Secondly, a new Honda Beat is apparently being planned for release. Designed by Pininfarina the Beat was a mid-engined two-seat roadster produced between 1991 and 1996. The new car will use an upgraded 800cc engine. Next in line for Honda is the all-new S2000 roadster which goes on sale either in late 2011 or early 2012.

Thirdly, Japan's biggest automaker Toyota is still on track for its luxury brand's first supercar. The Lexus LF-A will be powered by a V10 engine but timing has been pushed back at least 12 months, more likely 18 months. Pricing for the LF-A should be around US$340,000. As for the mother brand itself, Toyota's plans of competing with the Nissan 350Z (now 370Z) have not been cancelled. A new V6 Supra is under development for a 2011 world debut.

Lastly, there's news that Nissan wants to install a supercharged 1.0-litre engine in its Micra for a July 2009 debut, Mitsubishi's i-MIEV electric car will be inside showroom floors also by this July and Subaru will start selling the new Legacy as early as May 2009. The Legacy concept was revealed at the Detroit Auto Show a week ago.

Schway, now Porsche will have competition for the Cayenne and Painameera

mmm i dunno about that, the only reason the cayenne sold was because it had the enormous allure of the porsche badge. the same sort of applies to the four door coupes - notice how the only manufacturers going after it - porsche, bmw, lamborghini, audi, aston martin and mercedes - are probably the biggest names in the business, with really only ferrari missing, and even they might go for it if lamborghini does. a nissan badge doesn't really have the same appeal in most of the world, so i dunno if they'd sell...

Yeah, but they've got Infinity, they could stick that badge on the cars, and let's face it, stupid people buy a car just for it's badge, people who know a thing or two about cars, go test drive the cars they want to buy, compare the tech data, and they look at the design for God's sake, and the Painamera looks awful, the Cayenne expects a new gen soon, probably in the same time with the GT-R based SUV, so it should be a good fight, don't forget that everyone knows that Porsche have big car prices with relatively small production costs.

that's true, but don't forget the cayenne drives superbly for a 4x4. if nissan/infinity did manage to at least match that, then yeah it would be a good fight, but i think the cayenne would still win - if you're spending that kind of money, most people will see a porsche badge and jump at it, unfortunately..

So is the GTR being spun-off into a performance oriented sub-brand? It should be better to just let the GTR alone as a brooding loner in the line-up with its unique identity...because it's too cool have relatives like a saloon and a damn SUV!

I thought that Nissan did a marvelous job dropping the Skyline name from the GTR and ditching the saloon and lesser GTS versions (like the previous generations)and just using the GTR badge on the hardcore performance car. Adding more products will detract from its image...

And oh yeah...a new Honda Beat will be welcome!
