Race win crucial to Toyota's F1 future

Race win crucial to Toyotas F1 future

Without a debut grand prix victory in 2009, Toyota's future in formula one remains clouded.

In official team interviews and statements, the Japanese marque said it was committed to the sport amid the global financial crisis, and mere weeks after rivals Honda pulled out.

But in conversation with the media on Thursday, when the new TF109 racer was revealed, it emerged that the Cologne based team is under high pressure this season to deliver Toyota's first win since it entered the sport in 2002.

"Toyota's message has been very clear: we carry on with F1, however we all have a great responsibility to try to bring home the maiden victory, which could be decisive for the future," Italian driver Jarno Trulli told his country's sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Toyota management echoed the unambiguous 2009 target of a race win, and team president John Howett underlined the importance of achieving this goal.

"We have to win, I think that's clear. This organisation really only exists to win so we have to realise that we need to really make a change and deliver some outstanding performance this year," he told Reuters.

Trulli suggested that he or Timo Glock must win a race early this season, but said the venue for the achievement is not important.

"What counts is for it to happen in the first six races," he said.

As long Ferrari will make the games behind the scene with mr Ecalstone and mr Mosley, car makers like Toyota or BMW won't win to soon.

Love Toyota, but i don't mind if they leave F1 AS LONG as they return to their greatness in Le Mans. Its been too long, how much i'ld loooove a damn Toyota Prototype. Its also good because with the new green initiative in ALMS, more than ever, things learned at the track go to cars on the street.

I don't see why they couldn't prep a great WTCC touring car. They know how to build a good racer.

I don't know man, I give it no more then 50% chances to be in the WTCC, they do know how to make race cars, but this cost reducing, because of the crisis, is making more and more victims in motorsport.

Ya, don't get me wrong, even the best race cars will have trouble. Look at the GT-One TS020, next to the BMW V12 LMR, it was the best car on track in '99 but it lost in second place because of bad luck. The economy is going to change all race series, im sure many will live but things will change and likely work with smaller budgets.

@ M7 Bmw won already last year in Canada (Kubica, 1 year after it's huge crash also in Canada). For the rest i have too say that i find the Toyota F1 prettier then the Ferrari F1, just a personal oppinion, but i'd would love too see Toyota on the podiums more often and hopely on the top spot

It is one of the sharpest looking F1s on the track. I also respect Toyota because their entire car like Ferrari and McLaren is built inhouse.
