I'd rather buy a $20,000 car and $30,000 of fuel.

actually pzigly if you knew anything about the smart car is that its right up there with S-class in passenger safety. They even did a test with an S-class vs. a smart car, and guess what! the S-class received more damage. i was surprised too and personally i don't trust the smart car either. i mean why would i, LOOK at the thing lol. but yea, those are the facts :)

Actually that is a fallacy, the smart car isn't that safe. It has no crumple zones the passengers may not get severed limbs and what not, but most people in Smart Car crashes die of internal bleeding due to the tremendous g-forces their bodies witness.

Why would the G-forces in a Smart be any greater than any other car? $50K is WAY too much. Smarts are expensive to start off with, but no one is going to pay that for an EV version.

Great concept ... but absurdly over priced.

Since there is no crumple zone, the driver slows down much faster then they would in a full sized car. I thought the concept was fairly straight forward...

Clever move by Mercedes charging $50k for a electric Smart the only people silly enough to buy one will be Hollywood celebs like Gweneth & Leonardo who's Prius' must be getting a bit old by now (not to mention common)a bit of free advertising on the side of the cars telling the world it's electric and MB will be happy.

I agree with the logic of Davethepetrolhead. Even the regular Smart car in our market is bought as a "third"car for when it rains in the city and they can't ride their scooter or Ducati to work or goto the cafe for brunch by people with money. They already have the Hermes version of the Smart! Why not take the "snob" factor even higher with an electric one...so they can sneer at us common folks in our hybrids (which still burn fuel!) This sort of car sold in limited numbers would really be a clever piece of niche marketing.

$50k for a wheeled cell phone?? Why even bother?? with a world crisis, people won't even buy cheap petrol-based cars.....
