Following a mid-cycle facelift performed in 2007, the next generation BMW 1-Series is due to arrive in 2011. Prototype mules using the current 1-Series body (E87) have already been spotted testing around Germany and as a result artist renderings are starting to fill the speculative void.

Despite the early stage of testing, some details have been revealed. According to AutoBild, who spoke to BMW's product development chief, Klaus Draeger, BMW is keeping to the recent philosophy of fast developing new segments. Although a decision has not been made yet, the new 1-Series lineup may feature a type of elongated shooting-brake two-door wagon/ hatch variant. Such a variant, which can accommodate adult size rear passengers unlike the current 1-Series, would allow BMW to offer it to the US market.

The existing BMW and PSA Group alliance which already produces engines for MINI would build engines ranging from 1.4 liters to 3.0 liters for the 1-Series. Turbos are most certainly on the list, but an M version of the 1-Series is out of the question again.

BMW just keeps getting uglier and uglier. I figured they were going in the right direction with the 1 series and the new Z4. But now they release this concept, which I will assume will be production as well, and show us their design "talent", Chris Bangle, should be dragged out on a street and shot for such horrid designs, staining the name of BMW.

Here's to hoping this design stays as a concept only.

This concept is NOT made by BMW, it's made by a fanboy artist. Please try to read the article before you say stupid things.

Anyways, to tell the truth I haven't seen any artist renderings in the past that were just a little close to the final product. I wouldn't bet on this one either.

Chris Bangle, stupid decisions, ugly designs, why wouldn't this artist rendering be made real? It fits Chris Bangle's horrid designs. It is an assumption I will stick with.

I do not care what the article says, and yes I read it as well. You can love the horrid design, slidejohn, but what if this artist rendering becomes reality? Then what?

I am so in agreement. BMW really went wrong many years back - VW now doing the same - and it seems - in this segment - Audi are kicking them all in the balls.

While I don't expect it to look anything like the rendering... it can't be any worse than how it looks now

Haha, BMW fanboys will love it, to be honest it looks almost good, but the back it's ugly.

This is a speculative rendition. The real one will be very different from it.

They will no doubt here. Another thing is are they doing better than a outsiders conceptual vision on this redering.

you know what? it's just a rendering, but I like it. if only BMW could make cars this beautiful - simple, sleek and sexy.
