Hyundai seems undaunted by the crisis hitting the global automotive industry. At least, in how they're still pursuing a strategy of cracking the premium market and taking the brand upscale.

Here the Korean automaker has released design sketches of its next generation flagship luxury sedan. The model formerly known simply as the VI will now adopt the Equus name and will be making its debut in South Korea in February 2010. But this Equus will be using Hyundai's new rear-wheel drive architecture from the Genesis platform instead of being a front-wheel drive like the Equus of old.

The new Equus will come with a series of high-tech cabin gadgets that a customer would come to demand from a car in this class. These include safety features such as Vehicle Stability Management System, Lane Departure Warning System and Pre-Safety Seatbelt System which can tighten belts in the split-seconds before a crash.

Under the bonnet there will be a 4.6 liter V8 engine which Hyundai Blog says will be followed later by a 5.0 liter V8 with about 400 hp. Hyundai Blog reports of "rumors" that both engines may feature direct-injection gasoline technology. A rumor that shouldn't worry the German premium brands too much, who've had that technology for years and are still generations ahead of their would-be Korean competitors.

Well, it looks like a bloated Genesis, plus the side "kink" over the rear wheels remind me of Challanger and BMW CS, but it still looks very nice, and quite expensive. Astronomical improvement over the current one, for sure.

it looks great, and a big V8 is a nice touch, but it's still a korean car, and the korean car makers just don't have the luxury engineering know-how of the japanese, let alone the germans. if this was built in germany, it'd probably turn out to be a great car, but, sadly, no dice; it'll still be for the not-quite-successful. which is a shame, because it looks good..

do you know Hyundai is one of the world largest industry/ manufacturer loaded with money & technologies? 30 years ago, nobody can imagine Japanese cars can do the job, but look at them now. back in 89, same kinds of comments for Acura/ Lexus// Infiniti...look at them now. well, it's another sign that big 3 can't survive anymore. they just couldn't catch up with European/ Japanese & now Korean.

Lucifa, Hyundai has been in the luxury market for at least two decades by now. These cars have mostly been sold in Korea and a very small number of other countries. There, they are worthy competition to their German and Japanese counterparts. Point is, Hyundai has been perfectly capable of producing luxury vehicles for a fair amount of time.

Wow, Hyundai is really stepping up with coming out with designs that are eye catching, first the Genisis program and now this this.

I don't want to be such prejustice like Lucifa. I can imagine, Hyundai is on a great way to become a carmaker for a wide spride clientel. They have to try it, I think. A 400hp-Sportssedan is a high goal. I wish there all the best. When I saw the first pic, I thought about Mercedes S and about the rear: it reminds alot to Honda Legend. It looks good, but it can be more unique

Yeah, it looks like a Genesis on steroids, and maybe that's a good thing after all.

PS: The renderings show two options for the C-pillar design... one with an extra window and a more european look, and the other with a thicker pillar and a more american look... hope they keep the stronger, sportier second option.

I like new Hyundai espiacially Genesis. Just sad Genesis have poor quality of leather seats. But he use a music system which use Genesis and Rolls Royce

i think it's slightly arrogant of Hyundai. BMW, VW, Audi, Lexus and Jag *together* can't crack the almighty S-Class's stranglehold on this market. I don't see how Hyundai is going to manage it, especially in this economic climate. i have to concede it's good looking tho!

by "together" i mean the fact that the S-Class outsells them all singlehandedly, or so i read...

it doesn't mean to outsell or out-class the S-Class, it's still the benchmark luxury sedan. it's the matter of getting the market share. it's just a flagship for the brand to proof Hyundai can do it, & bring more sell in general for the whole line of products. just like NSX & GT-R, to name a few of the similar purpose...

Hyundai used to build one of the cheapest cars in the world, just like Toyota did 30 years ago. and Toyota came out with Lexus and it became one of the finest car in the world. you never know how Hyundai will be like may be even 10 years later from now...they are really steping up!

I think it looks decent. Hyundai, I think it's time for you guys to make a luxury brand, like what Toyota and Nissan and Honda did in the 80s and 90s.
