Jaguar is putting more heat on the Teutons with a confirmed XF-R, spied here in blazing red. Seen clearly are 20-inch wheels, a small rear spoiler, chrome-tipped quad exhaust pipes and air intakes on the bonnet. According to sources at Jaguar, the XF-R is as close to launch as May 2009. Some media speculation says the XF-R will be on public display at the upcoming 2009 Detroit Motor Show.

The British marque is riding the crest of the wave ever since it introduced the Ian Callum-designed XF in 2007. Said to be carrying a 5.0-litre direct injection engine instead of the old trusty 4.2 V8, the XF-R could run about 500hp/ 378kW under its hood.

Another rumour says an even more potent XF-R R will pose a 600hp/ 447kW threat to the likes of Mercedes E 63 AMG, BMW M5, Cadillac CTS-V and Audi RS 6.

standard versions of the XK are *way* better set up than the A6, so this should follow the same trend vs the rs6, except on the wet maybe

totally agree...look stunning and if they really develope that supercharged 5.0 V8 with over 500hp it will be also a hard thing to beat!

I'm slightly confused where this 5.0L V8 is coming from? is it a stroked 4.6L aluminum block from the mustang? Is it a naturally aspirated version of the 5.4L from the GT-500 that has had the displacement changed??? I have no idea where this engine is sourced from and it may end up being the downfall of this car, realistically they had that 4.2 V8 for a very long time and in 2008 it was still very problematic, now they come out with a new engine? It's a very sleek looking car inside and out, i would love one. Only thing holding me back is the engine, dont trust the 4.2 and even less this new engine that just appeared out of the blue.

ford doesn't own jaguar or aston martin (correct me if i'm wrong).... TATA, and indian car maker bought it off. sooo i'm betting it's a whole new engine??? i don't know.

Jaguar/Land Rover are still using engines developed with Ford's help for the time being. Tata does not own AM though.

The 5.0L V8 is just an enlarged version of the 4.2L V8, but it also has direct injection.

The new 5.0 V8 engine is a brand new engine, it's 100% designed and built by Jaguar in the UK. It's to be fitted in the new XKR & XJR pretty soon aswell...

Radmeister - the previous 4.2 V8 engine was a very reliable/powerful engine, take a look at Jaguars excellent J.D Power results over the last several years...

This new XF-R will be a big shock to BMWs M5 & Mercs E63 etc...
