Word on the street is that Volkswagen is preparing an all-new Volkswagen Polo GTI for 2010. Anticipating a Frankfurt Motor Show launch in September, the new Polo looks to raise the bar for superminis.

Coming with the same 1.4 liter super- and turbo-charged four-cylinger TSI as the Ibiza Cupra, this will likely be the fastest Polo ever. 178 bhp (130 kW) and 184 ft-lbs (249 Nm) of torque means this hatchback could have a 0-60mph in under seven seconds. The top speed will be around 140mph (225 km/h).

This fast little car will likely be a bit of a fuel-sipper, as the engine is relatively small. Some numbers being bounced around are 40mpg (7 l/100km), and 150 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The Polo GTI would likely fit into emissions Band C, so UK buyers would not have to pay a fortune in yearly vehicle tax.

A six-speed manual will come standard, with a seven speed automatic dual-clutch also available.

Exterior styling will have many commonalities with the Golf GTI, such as a black honeycomb grille wrapped in a red line that blends seemlessly into the front bumper. Alloy wheels, an aerodynamic body kit, and an overall aggressive look is likely. We would not be surprised to see red brake calipers, dual exhaust, and signal mirrors.

The interior will be significantly improved, with softer plastics and better detailing. Expect a nice set of sport seats, aluminum pedals, iPod adapter, and premium stereo as interior options.

The Volkswagen Polo GTI will be introduced as the top-of-the-line model for the next generation VW Polo. It should be roughly the same size as the current Polo, but with a bit more space inside. Platform sharing with the SEAT Ibiza, engineers will add a tighter suspension, and stability control.

Look for pricing to be in the neighborhood of £15,500. If that is accurate, it will be about £5,000 cheaper than the Mk 6 Golf GTI. There is no doubt the Volkswagen Polo GTI will be one of the top sellers of the 2010 model year.

I hope the new design will have anything to distinguish it from the Golf.

V-dub always know how to get their hot hatches right. This doesn't disappoint either.

Looks cute and all, but not enough to battle the likes of the new ford fiesta and mazda 2. I think VW is playing too safe on its new design direction, but hey, isn't "safe" the new "smart" these days? Yawn.

pretty nice. im curious about the new cross polo. the last one looked great..... now this with 1.4 tsi engine. it must be great. what i dont get is the super- and turbocharged engine. if they can do that, why dont make a twin turbo 1.4 ...variable twinT. that would be sick... :D

178 bhp in a shoe! It doesn't get any better. Manufacturers should concentrate in cars like these instead of hybrids. This thing is faster to 60 than any hybrid, faster than a V6 Charger, but since it has a pocket sized 1.4 engine, it should be very efficient. Hey, it saves you fuel and yet you can beat a V6.....what else could you ask for?

Just wondering how much it'd cost to replace not only a turbocharger but also a supercharger when out of warranty. Something to look forward to.
