General Motors has already taken deposits on 10,000 advance orders for the new Chevrolet Camaro. Orders started coming in for the next generation Camaro this past October. However, supplier problems may cause delivery delays.
Cadence Innovation, the interior parts supplier for the Camaro, is in bankruptcy. Cadence is simultaneously liquidating their own equipment while waiting for a white knight to buy them out.
As is standard practice, GM handed over their own machinery and raw materials to Cadence, who would then make the Camaro interiors. Now that Cadence is bankrupt, the company is hesitant to return the equipment to GM. Cadence sees the Camaro deal as being a key feature to sell the company, and returning the equipment ends the partnership.
GM claims they need the equipment by January 12, or Camaro production will stall.
A delay could be enough for customers to cancel their orders, which would be damaging to the Big 3 automaker's struggle for survival.
Interestingly, the majority of orders is for the Chevy Camaro with a 300 horsepower V6 engine, as opposed to the V8 or SS models, according to GM North America marketing chief Mark LaNeve.
"We are getting a considerable amount of V-6 orders," LaNeve said. He believes new Camaro customers are "people who are just interested in a very stylish car that gets pretty good fuel economy. It’s kind of a sign of the times.”
