BMW has retired its classic 3.2 liter inline six-cylinder engine.

The powerplant, known as the S54B32 amongst BMW engineers and automotive purists, powered the last generation Z4 M Roadster and Coupe, the M3 (E46) and a several earlier generation Z3 M Roadster and Coupes too. The 3.2 liter engine distinguished itself as a naturally aspirated straight-six churning out 343 hp - more than 100 hp per liter without any artificial induction. That simplicity and artfulness of engineering made the engine renowned for its steady levels of torque across the rev band.

One should always be weary when an automaker phases-out a classic product and replaces it with the new and unproven. How many times has a manufacturer messed up the process of renewal and actually taken a product line a few steps back? After all, this engine won the International Engine of the Year award upon its introduction in 2001 as well as winning the 3.0 to 4.0 liter category for six consecutive years between 2001 and 2006.

But this is BMW and maybe a little trust is warranted. They don't usually leap blindly into the marketplace with under-developed products, especially engines.

The S54B32 will be replaced in the Z4 by other inline six-bangers, including a 2.5 liter, 201 hp and a twin-turbo 3.0 liter with 302 hp. Let's hope those powerplants come packed with the same kind of supple sizzle.

I guess if you look past the troubled first few years of production, the insane maintenance costs, and the only so-so fuel economey...then yeah...it's pretty remarkable...And any true gear head should have no trouble doin just that! What a great motor...I just hope "The Ultimate Driving Machine" doesn't die with it.

I wish they would find another model to put it into, I don't think any true car and BMW fan would be disappointed, and let's face it, a 1 series with that engine would just me magic, how good would it sound for starters! tail out fun all day

Amazing engine, but if they bring the 4L V8 to the new Z4-M that would be EPIC!!!!!!! But don't fear it still lives in disguise in the x35 series, and with a proper chip and exhaust it breathes fire again, pumping out 360hp.

Sad to see it go, but inevitable... that N/A engine was a masterpiece

bmw are listening too much on their marketing department. they should dump this baby on a lightweight, fat tyred two door 1-series before axeing it

I agree, but the fact they axed the CSL M3 in favour of X5 and X6 says it all really, BMW aren't doing this for the fans that carried them through the years and the cars that gave them their marvellous reputation for drivers' cars, they're doing it - like you stated - because the marketing department wants them to.

Sad to see it happen, but i have to agree with them on this one, the CSL project cost them a lot of money the last time, and for what a measly 200 units or however many they sold? The X5 and X6 sell well and expanded their market share to other categories of vehicles. To tell you the truth the CSL was not that good of a buy at 50,000$ over the regular M3, and the current M3 is already faster than the previous CSL. The harsh reality is a new CSL would have been a bad investment and this is not the economic time for throwing money away to make some forum/website readers happy because lets face it not many people out there would get an M3 CSL over a Porsche RS3 or can afford it.

That is a shame. Such an engine and the delivery of power was great! Good luck BMW hope the new engine is as great! But cant see it not being!

nismo's comments are relevant regards relability etc during earlier production periods, however it is a good engine and deserved the awards. Dont think the Audi,BMW,M/Benz premium brands are headlocked by "marketing/selling" gurus when it comes to engineering, therefore these very experienced engine and vehicle manufacturers are hardly going to resort to lowering their respective standards. Decisions of this nature would have, together with development, testing etc been underway for years before the announcement.Reality is that no manufacturer of repute is going to foist untried, untested or unproven product on to today's highly competitive market. To do so would be at their substantial risk and cost.
