2009 auto show season revealed

The Big Three's traditional round of "backgrounder" preview events for the media took place this week, giving the manufacturers a chance to reveal embargoed details for the upcoming auto show season and give automotive journalists a head-start as to what can be expected from this year's round of concept cars. It's business as usual, and it allows the media to frame stories in advance, awaiting final details.

This year, however, Chrysler decided to exclude the bloggers. Though blogs like Jalopnik.com and Autoblog.com are getting just as much respect as the established magazines from most corners of the industry, Chrysler's director of Product and Brand Communications, Rick Deneau, shut the bloggers out on the mistaken belief that the Internet news sites were more likely to leak pertinent details and break the information embargoes.

Bad idea.

Freed from the constraints of non-disclosure agreements (and probably more than a little disgruntled), Jalopnik, Autoblog and others were all too happy to scoop Chrysler's entire auto show season thanks to leaks from other sources--possibly even members of the "traditional" media who were at the event. Ironically, there's a good chance that Chrysler's embargo wouldn't have been broken if it weren't for Deneau's decision to offend the blogs--who attended GM and Ford's presentations without leaking any details.

I don't intend this to offend anyone but I know it probably will. Aside from the jobs and economy at stake, who really cares about Chrysler??? Perhaps someone out there does. I can't remember the last time I looked forward to something coming out of Chrysler.

It's sad. For decades Chrysler was the design- and engineering-driven company among the Big 3, and they were well on their way back to that before the Daimler takeover. Maybe they can rebirth themselves (yet again, as in 1957, 1963, 1980 and the early 90s) as that kind of automaker, since their entire product line has turned to ugly vehicles not fit for the times. Walter P would like that, and the US could use an innovator again.

It was Chrysler who revived the auto show dream car in the 90's. Those specialty cars didn't make it to production but they were something to look forward to. One of the reasons given during the "merger" days was "think of cars with the reliaiblity of a Mercedes and the styling innovation of Chrysler."

A lot of these old school PR people don't realize the value of internet. And stupid moves like this only prove it. This lack of foresight and vision is exactly why the us car companies are in the desperate situation they face. no innovation!

To machida; I am always impressed with your level of depth, understanding and knowledge when I read your replies. You are very spot on even when we have mildly different taste and opinions on issues. When I was much younger, my dad used to tell me about the history of engineering prowess at Chrysler and their leadership in this area. This grand history has been very difficult for me to imagine during my lifetime but it seems that I keep hearing about it over and over from others. This turn of events is so sad to me because aside from a couple of sporadic hits/trendsetter over the last 35 years, they have been pretty unremarkable. I'll have to wish them the best of luck even though their current offerings are not inspiring to me. They seem useless to me now but perhaps a miracle is possible.
