The next VW Beetle will likely be less of a chick car, and more fun to drive.

New details on the next-generation Volkswagen Beetle have leaked out. Car Magazine is reporting that the 2011 VW Beetle was going to be split up into two models. But now the German manufacturer has decided on a new path.

Originally, there would be two Beetles; a tiny car barely large enough for a family, based on the 2007 VW up! concept, and a bigger version based on the Golf. Now, the automotive group will make the production up! a front-engined car, which means the new Beetle should premiere sometime in early 2010 as a separate car altogether.

And no more womanly curves on the next Beetle, either. Plans call for a more aggressive and manly look, which could be disastrous if it pushes the current customer base away from the car and does not draw attention from newcomers.

Instead, the car is speculated to look a bit more like the VW Ragster concept from the Detroit show in 2005. This means we could be looking at a flat-roofed four-seater, with a hatchback and steep angles. And there may be more versions down the line, as VW is considering spinning off the Beetle into a new brand. Expect a wide range of engine choices, and better drivability with the new Beetle.

Car Magazine also mentions a Scirocco-based four seater coupe, and a new Karmann Ghia! The Touran may also spawn a new VW bus or twin-cab pick-up.

However, don't expect anything drastic until the economy gets back into shape.

It is just a rendition by Larson, the real one will be nothing like this. Impressive plans... I must say. I like the idea of a beetle spin off as a separate brand catering to the younger crowd, just like Scion. Beetle image is completely feminish and that might keep boys away from any beetle brand product...

Hmm, the people's car. It better provide something revolutionary to live up to its name this time, not just a car selling off its retro appeal.

Hm, that vent makes me think if they HAD gone rear-engine with it. Too bad they didn't keep "Up"'s rear-engine layout, the platform would obviously have fit great with the beetle, even possibly up-sizing it to develop a new rear-engined Bus/Vanagon, not to mention a rear/mid layout sportscar. Ce la Vie, Fahrvegnugen.

This rendering was produced before it was revealed the Beetle would switch from rear to front engined.

It's great progess, it is more like a Mini. They should knick the round headlights and use scultped xenon/led's. Also lower the roof height and pull the front pillar forward to get rid of the bubble. They could spin an entire Mini competition line off this car and sell it at a premium-and people would pay. So long as feminine gimmicks such as split rear hatch with 2 windshield wipers (99.5% supergay) can stay out of the mix.

they definitely based it on the up! concept and simply crossed it with the 500.

Do you have some kind of a mental health problem? About the picture of the beetle: it's just another artist rendering that has nothing to do with an official VW design, so don't expect the final product to look anything like this.
