UAW agrees to suspend controversial jobs bank - make other concessions

The UAW, the union that represents US auto workers, has begun making concessions in order to save the industry and help secure government funding for the Big 3 Detroit automakers.

The United Auto Workers had agreed to suspend the jobs bank program, a controversial element of their contract with automakers, that allows laid-off auto workers to continue to draw up to 95 percent of their salaries while unemployed. They've also agreed to deferred payments by automakers into a health-care fund for retired employees, a major part of their landmark labor agreement with automakers back in 2007.

The UAW has also made concessions on reductions in pay. For new hires, compensation will go from about $78 dollars an hour to 26 dollars, which includes pay and benefits.

US auto workers have been hit hard not only by the recent crisis but by the steady decline of the Big 3 over the last several years. GM has said it will shed an additional 31,000 jobs as part of its restructuring plan. The UAW has lost 119,000 members since 2006. Union membership peaked at 1.5 million back in 1979 and has been declining ever since.

That first 25 billion goes primarily to the UAW, if you decide to help the Big 3 it should go to them. We have to remember the big picture...lots of world wide car companies and competition ...the Big 3 have been selling less cars because of more choices....they are too large and need to downsize. Keep chevy and cadillac and sell Hummer,Buick,Saab, GMC and Saturn. Chysler should be out of the loop because it is owned by a private firm.. The problem is the Big 3 do not have product line like so many of the competitors. The competitors 6-8 speed trannies, double clutch trannies, more projector/HID and LED lights, better roof strength standards, Hydrogen cell for lease California, Natural gas cars like the Honda GX, BMW lease hydrogen, ESC offered standard in more vehicles, both side and curtain airbags standard in more vehicles, passive and active rollbars in convertibles, more car choices, diesel/hybrid choices, electric vehicles--Karma, Mini electric, etc

oh my god. Do you not realize that GM sells more hybrids then any other manufacturer. You also talk as if curtain airbags are non existent in American vehicles, which they aren't. Have you any idea that America has also produced more diesel vehicles then any other automotive manufacturer ever. LED lights are a fad until they get cheaper, they don't do anything but drive up the price of the vehicle. Most American cars have 6 speed trannies, 8 speed is overkill and again needlessly drives up the cost of a vehicle. Most european/japanese cars don't have double clutch trannies. American cars also have to fight stricter fuel emission ratings and manage to do it with larger displacement less stressed engines. Meaning that while the hp/liter ratio isn't as high as their competitors, there vehicles will last hundreds of thousands of km's longer and be 10 times cheaper to fix when and if something does go wrong. Don't get me wrong, I love Japanese and European vehicles just as much as American cars, it's just that when you post such an ignorant comment it must be countered.

I do not have to counter. Compare similar car categories/prices and the Small 3 do not come close whether interior finish or technology for the same price. Hyundai and Kia further demonstrate how fast they can make product changes and nothing in the Small 3 compares to the Genesis for that price.

The Genesis's dircet GM competitor is the CTS. They have similar price range power and fuel economy. Do yourself a favor and sit in a CTS, they have amazing interiors. And at least imo both the exterior and interior look a lot nicer then the Genesis. If you want quality with a cheap price and a nice interior, go for a saab. It will be cheaper and you get a car that looks 2x better then the genesis. If power is your game the G8 will get you there for $10,000 less. I still don't see your point if you can't tell. No I am not saying korean jap or even german cars are crap. I am just saying they are all about equal, and all focusing on slightly different areas.

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE UNIONS SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS YEARS AGO AND THEY ARE TO BLAME FOR THE PROBLEMS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dismiss the UAW, that's the 1st thing big 3 need to do. r u kidding me? now u consider "suspend" the job bank? read between the line, UAW just "suspend" it, not cut it. so, as soon as the big 3 got bailed out, UAW will "resume" the job bank? & yes, now they consider reduce the compensation salary from $78/ hr to twenty something? wow! they at least earn $78/ hr currently? get rid of the UAW, save the big 3.

Too little too late. UAW and the top executives ate all potential profits. Detroit kept losing 3000 per car for years, and was rendered incompetitive in the global automotive world.
