Finally, a bit of good news for the North American International Auto Show. In spite of the growing exodus of manufacturers from Detroit's January show, Fisker Automotive has confirmed that it will debut the production version of the Karma plug-in hybrid at the show as scheduled.

The aluminum and composite body is stretched over an aluminum space frame, and sports only minor design tweaks from the striking, curvaceous concept sedan shown last year. A larger grille, side-vent exhaust for the combustion engine, and a flush-mounted B-pillar comprise the bulk of the changes that have been added to the Karma, enhancing its safety and the cooling for its gasoline engine. The four-passenger production interior will be revealed at the show for the first time.

The Fisker Karma's turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine produces 260 horsepower, and coupled with the large 22.6 kWh Li-Ion battery is good for a reported 5.8-second 0-60 run, a 125-mph top speed and a combined 408 horsepower. The Karma has a 50-mile full-electric range, and the potential to average 100mpg.

Deliveries of the Karma are scheduled to start in November 2009. Pricing has been set at $87,900 and Fisker Automotive reports that the production run is sold out through mid-2010.

I might not be able to afford one right now, but, I know what I'll be buying when I can afford something like this. And this is it!!! Gorgeous, fast and responsible. What a great alternative when looking at an S-Class, 7 Series or A8.

It certainly is a wonderful design packing some nice engineering, but you shouldn't compare this car to the big german luxury sedans, it's more in the CLS, Panamera, Rapide's arena instead. And how about the sound which stands for a substantial part in the true driving joy? Finally let's not fall for the demagogue crap: modern top performance/luxury cars should account for, say, 0.001% of the world's pollution. Why follow the extreme left hoax blaming it mainly on private automobiles while leaving way more dangerous polluters in impunity (traditional energy, big industry, fishing and naval activities, airplane transportation, the military, etc.)

I quite like that. I am still sceptic that Henrik Fisker will pull it off, but if I does I could be in the market at the right time.

...and to be honest, at first glance I thought it was something like a replica of SLR. But I can say Fisker Karma has done something great.

looks great, idea is terrifically executed, but 0-60 in 5.8sec? that's a little bothersome, especially with a combined 408 hp, i love the car though

Beautiful car. It is amazing how a small company with R&D also is able to sell this for $80,000, it should be $200,000. Just think if the Big 3 could make this it would be much less. How is it they can come out with this car so fast and the Big 3 are unable. What ever happened to the 1.5 billion dollars that was given by President Clinton to the Big 3 on his way out , to make the Big 3 the leader in hydrogen car. Honda ended up being the first hydrogen car leader with the first lease program in California this year.

True automative design masterpiece ... this has such great styling that it will live on as a classic up there with the original Ferrari Dino ... being a leader in green technology and coming from a new player makes the whole thing even more amazing ... an outstanding effort in every way !!!
