Nissan Pulls Out of Detroit and Chicago Shows
Nissan

Joining Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Land Rover, Nissan of North America is pulling out of the North American International Auto Show, also known as the Detroit Auto Show that's taking place in January 2009. This move is a huge blow to the world-acclaimed motor show, which has in the past, drawn every major auto maker to display their product there.

The Japanese company is citing a depressed economy as the reason for pulling out, and not the show's international standing. To add chilli sauce to wound, Nissan is also not showing up at the Chicago Auto Show either, that one scheduled for February 2009, for the same reasons. Nissan says it believes it has covered new product launches for 2009 at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show where it unveiled the new 370 Z and Cube. Saving cash is an utmost priority right now and Nissan says the costs of appearing on these two shows are "not a small line item on your marketing budget".

These sentiments are echoed by CEO Carlos Ghosn who reportedly says he is no longer interested in courting any American car brand as he has been over the past three years or so. Instead now the focus has shifted to conserving available cash.

I feel terribly cynical to be delighted by all this recession/depression stuff. Can't wait till things cost what they are supposed to again.

This is frustrating....American cars are finally going to be able to show off a decent product but no one will be there. Unfortunately i can't justify making the drive in for it if 50% of the normal show won't be there so i will be part of that not coming crowd

Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Land Rover and Nissan are hardly half the show. There's still GM, Ford, Chrysler, Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus/Scion, Subaru, Mazda, VW Group, MB, BMW Group, Hyundai/Kia, Chengfeng, Chery, Ssangyong, Tata, Zil, LawnBoy, Frigidaire and the lovely weather... I wouldn't miss it.

yeah, its an exaggeration but i can def can miss those Chinese brands that were named. And don't forget the DUB brand (a disgrace to automobiles). Sorry those who travel to this show (like me) will be showing in lower numbers.

GT-R was launched a year ago in LA. Nissan showed Cube and 370Z last week in LA. They have nothing *new* to show in Detroit. But yeah, the no-show thing doesn't seem to help slow sales. Ghosn's looking at the significant expense of attending and the return on investment, but he might be forgetting the value of not being forgotten by consumers. Some people are determined to save money no matter what it costs. ;)

Nissan can only make 1000 gt-rs a month being hand built etc so they are still rare in most parts of the world.
