Official Porsche Panamera leaked images

Could this be the official, true-life image of the new Porsche Panamera? Yes, according to Dutch publication AutoTelegraaf. A Monday embargo on the images and possibly details has supposedly been broken by Auto Motor und Sport and more details should be available this Sunday night.

Panamera is a four-door coupe from Porsche that is aimed to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz CLS, the upcoming Audi A7 2+2, BMW CS concept-based 2+2 coupe and Aston Martin Rapide. It's a hefty customer this Panamera, measuring 16.3ft (4.97 metres) long, 6.3ft (1.9m) wide and 4.66ft (1.4m) tall. The wheelbase is quantified at 9.6ft (2.9m). Curb mass approaches two tonnes.

As a package it will feature the most advanced and passenger-car focused technologies, such as an electronic air suspension, PDK gearbox, an LSD for good traction, and current interior comforts. The Porsche Panamera is obviously a Porsche, which means no sparing of thought when it comes to engine power.

Initially the two variants available will be an S model and a Turbo, the former kicking out 400bhp (300kW) from its 4.8-litre V8 and the Turbo launching upwards of 500bhp (373kW), thanks to a twin-turbo system running through its gut. V6 petrol power should join the two later, packing around 300bhp (223kW), while hybrid power comes at a later stage. If Porsche terminology is anything to go by we can also expect Turbo S models too worth over 600bhp (447kW). Although diesels have been ruled out, there cannot be 100 percent certainty on the issue; Porsche did once say the Cayenne would not offer diesel as an option. Today it's a different story.

An estimated 20,000 units are planned for sale at the start, with production going on to 50,000 per year depending on demand. Sales of Panamera begin in the US, Europe and Asia in 2009.

I guess this one is tied for the number one spot in "ugliest porsche ever" with Cayenne.

i think i've picked the problem with the rear end - front and back both need bigger rims because it's a large car, but because of the unbalanced nature of the styling - namely, the back being a lot larger/heavier than the front - it needs the rims at the back to be one size larger than the ones at the front so it looks like it's leaning forward slightly. 19" on the back and 18" on the front, or 20/18 if you really wanted to go to town, and some big tyres, and i reckon it'd look fine.

CAR Magazine published a proposed computer-generated visual simulation of what they thought the 4-door Porsche should look like , coated in silver paint finish . the design looked quite athletic and elegant at the same time and sported a very finely - proportioned rear slope without appearing " grotesquely-pregnant " like this production example . this issue appeared sometime four years ago with which I think was a very good depiction of how to apply the right look and physical proportions for this car . Zuffenhausen ought to have consulted CAR Magazine earlier on instead of having finally arrived at this disastrous result .

the only complaint i ever had was the rear end - like the rear wheel backwards - but, if this is official, it's turned out a lot better than i thought. still looks a bit ungainly, but i guess i could get used to it. looks kinda cool =)

The heavy rear makes the wheels look like castors on a sofa in much the same way as BMW have small standard wheels. Looks more like a Tourer. Awkward looking and I dont like it. There is no competition when compared to a Rapide or Estoque. It will probably be a great driver's car.

THERENAISSANCEMAN

small wonder .. the " teaser ad " tried hard not to reveal the rear section because this is how it would appear .

November 22, 2008 5:42 PM
It does look slightly better than in earlier images, but its stil ugly as what. Calling it a coupe is just lie. If Porsche would just confess that it came out as a estate by mistake cause the designer worked on it drunk late at night, then i just might forgive Porsche and forget that the panamera even exists. But if Porsche presents it proudly thinkin it look good im just gonna start hating porsche.

November 22, 2008 9:43 PM
guys, you are simply stupid. You think to have any opinion how it is to combine innovations with a known designline. I think, Porsche did a good job. The Panamera isn't my taste at all, but be constructive and serious about what you see. not every car can look the same: like YOUR dreamcar

foose1397
November 22, 2008 10:48 PM
I agree people need to be constructive in conversation but this doesn't mean there stupid. Ignorant comments like this just fuel the fire. People are entitled to there opinion and whether you like it or not they are the consumer. As a designer (or any job) you learn real quickly that in the end it all comes down to them.

There's something about this car as if it's having an identity crisis... Classic design cues with some sharp lines and then alot of rounded lines... Confused it is if you ask me!(It better not have those small wheels and look so high in real life)

not to pick on you, but in general to all those people who are calling these pictures fake and HOPING to get something better than this, I HIGHLY doubt its gonna be better than this. the general shape and lights are all very similar to the spy photos we have witnessed on this site, as well as... yea that's it. However, don't expect anything better than this. porsche clearly made it clear there staying with this general shape (especially that hideous rear hump or whatever you call it), from looking at the spy photographs. sooooooo seriously, just stop everyone and wait til it finally comes out... then laugh some more :P

ck314
November 23, 2008 12:06 AM
A four-door Porsche couldn't look any different without losing the brand's identity. The rear looks better than expected, but will require big diameter wheels 19-20" and lowered suspension to be truly sexy all around. Some dupes here haven't gotten what Porsche's design philosophy is all about: bold attractiveness, not feminine beauty (aka Aston, Maserati, etc.)

Joe_Limon
November 23, 2008 5:46 AM
I thought Porsche design philosophy was to keep remaking the same car design. That way they don't have to re tool their machines every time they make a new model, which in turn helps pad their profit margin... which already sits at a healthy average of $28000 per car.

November 23, 2008 3:44 AM
that rear end seems like a renault megane whith a porsche cayenne, just ugly.....

Hiromichi
November 23, 2008 4:08 AM
To me, the car looks so many design cues taken from other models and just put them together. Front is clearly a Cayenne, side is like Maserati QP, rear quarter is like Reliant or Jensen, rear is something like old Jag. Why should the car be hatchback. My expectation was bit more elegant and this might not be able to go with Aston-Martin.

the front seems corvette-alike to me.. and the rear.. all has been said.

RobERob
November 23, 2008 12:34 PM
It's original, it's fun, it's sporty, it's a Porsche! It also a shape that doesn't conform to anything else out there, which is a good thing in adding to it's gawk factor. Doesn't seem like the overall verdict in the looks department is a very positive one but in time, I believe this will be a big hit for Porsche, in both sales and acceptance. The only minor detail I'd think about changing if I were it's designer/engineer is the slope of the rear roof line. I probably lower just slightly to give it more of that 911 look.

ck314
November 26, 2008 2:55 PM
If you did then rear passengers would need to be dwarfs, little kids or experienced contorsionists in order to get in and out of the car. I assume you already will have to be in good shape to do it in this configuration, especially with lowered suspension and bucket seats!

November 23, 2008 5:32 PM
If cars were designed following the comments above, every car in the world would look the same. I think with the panamera will be the same as with the quattroporte. First time i saw it in photos i thought it was ugly, but as it has an original shape it doesn't sell as much as CLS (for example)could sell, so we I didn't get used to it. As result, when I saw it in the streets i got fascinated. Although, it`s a porsche, and will sell well.

v6s_stink
November 23, 2008 6:39 PM
In a few places it copies lines from the new Opel. This takes talent since the new Opel has no original lines of its own.

v6s_stink
November 23, 2008 6:43 PM
Since there is really nothing "Porsche" about this vehicle they should use their Volkswagen tie to launch with an all new version of the Corrado engine. How about a W9. It couldn't be any more awkward than the styling.

cemi
November 23, 2008 6:50 PM
I cannot get myself into liking this car. The front turned out to be better than I thought but from their backwards its ugly ugly ugly. The camel hump back is just plain wrong.

GanSan
November 24, 2008 5:29 AM
I don't like 911's without a rear wing just the same as the Panamera. The wing certainly makes it.

Coming to think of it, it's the same with the 350/370 for me. Without a rear wing, I don't like them at all. I think the sloping rear just needs something to break up the shape a little.

I'm surprised that the majority of people commenting don't like it! I would have thought it'd be considered a beautiful and classic design...

Ah well, other peoples' style isn't to my taste either so I can't complain. I would certainly buy a Panamera if I could afford it.

you reckon? it's got pretty rough competition - aston, lamborghini, amg, bmw (if they do actually build the CS). it might beat it's competitors - nobody knows yet obviously - but i doubt it'd be that large a difference

Pretty much everybody hates this design...but i kinda like it. I admit, its certainly not the greatest looking Porsche but there is something about it that attracts me to it. Everybody is different I guess.

Schizo0223
November 24, 2008 9:35 AM
I think this is one of those "must see it in person to make a decision" type of car. If it were a little bit shorter I think it would be a rather nice looking car. It's a Porsche grand tourer...so I didn't expect a car that would look like anything else on the market in the first place. I'm just glad that it doesn't have a conventional trunk. This car is unique!

Also...the fact that this car would probably need to carry more than one set of golf bags and boston bags probably dictated alot about the design of the rear end. There are some people that put off buying a car because it can't fit enough golf bags to accomodate their lifestyle...and this Panamera is definitely going to the country club more often than other cars!

Bristol411S3
November 24, 2008 9:52 AM
To a degree what it looks like is academic. As the Cayenne crowd get increasingly polarised for buying and running polar bear mudering 4x4s, they are looking for a way out and Porsche has smartly rolled out the Panamera at just the right time. I expect it to be a success and to help fuel further growth for Porsche who, let's not forget, are now one of the automotive power houses globally. Criticise the detail all you want, but Wiedeking has taken them from near bankrupcy less than 20 years ago to ownership of VW and one of the most profitable, if not THE most profitable, car company currently in existance.

I think the idea is genius (but not expected for this car maker), it is not at all the Porsche we are used to. I don´t like it, neither would be able to afford it (ha!). Yet I think is not the Porsche I would like to dream with, far away from what a Carrera GT is, trying to take back parts of the old Porsches and bring it to "these times" (Those awful letters SEAT Leon Cupra like instead of those golden classic Porsche badges... not my taste at all... Gee!) I think they have gone far of what the essence of a dream sport car would be for many but the market and preferences changed them... Na ja... no good opinion about it, I still don´t like it, it breaks with my dream of a Porsche but they haven´t messed with my beloved 911. Ausgezeignet engineering job I must say and reviewers will prove it right... just left to wonder, is this is the way we ever dreamed or wanted (deadly fans) Porsche to go?

ck314
November 26, 2008 2:40 PM
This car is just great, period. With the right color and extras combo it will distill class and glamour from every inch. The gentleman driver's family car, leaving the 911 for the track on weekends.
