2010 Toyota Prius Commercial Leaked

"The 2010 Toyota Prius...Once you own one it will become one of YOUR favorite things." That is the tagline of the 2010 Prius whose latest television commercial has been leaked. Presented video clip features the 2010 Prius showing itself off on a round rotating ‘catwalk'. Background music is a jazzed-up version of "My Favorite Things" from the musical The Sound of Music to go with the tagline.

Prius is the most successful hybrid system-powered vehicle on the planet, having sold over a million units worldwide so far. It has gone through the usual nip/tuck facelift and now looks forward to a next-generation world debut at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The video shows clearly most of the new car's body features, but doesn't reveal much else, apart from the tagline above.

Toyota says although 2009 Prius is only slightly bigger than its predecessor, it has more rear passenger and boot space, thanks to the fact that it's grown bigger and wider. Despite this, an even better fuel efficiency level is said to have been attained from the hybrid system, the details of which Toyota is understandably coy about.

Toyota US top executive Jim Lentz is quoted as having mentioned other body styles to join the Prius hatch, styles like a wagon, commuter car or even a two-door coupe.

This looks the same as the existing model while looking a heck of a lot better at the same time. However, I still prefer the Honda Insight. It has a really fresh, clean and modern appearance without looking plain weird. I also imagine that the Honda will feel a little more fun to drive than the Toyota, because Honda's usually do.

Do you ever wonder if all Japanese carmakers use a common pool of designers? It always seems like the same design cues show up from all of them at the same time. Like the identical greenhouses on the original Lexus ES, Acura Vigor, Mitsu Diamante and Mazda 929 back in the 90s. Or the Z headlamps on this new Prius...

Interesting IP. Looks like they forgot the speed readout? Good that they didn't mess too much with success, though the taillamps don't line up with the secondary rear window anymore. Insight does seem more cohesive as a design. But it certainly looks like a Prius, and that's smart (especially considering how dumpy the first gen looked).

It does seems like there are periods in automotive history where everyone is using the same thing. For example, I look at the pervasive use of BMW's kink by so many automakers... European and Asian. Or the return of round/oval headlights that the M-B E320 started. Trends, fads, current fashion???

The conventionally placed shifter seems like regression from the convenient and novel lever in the current model. And when will automakers learn how not to design steering wheel spokes? Those vertical lower spokes means your hands will fall into pinch points unless you hold the wheel at the ideal (but unrealistic) 10 and 2 position.

nice overall but the dashboard seems abnormally high in respect to the seating position, as opposite to french automakers that provide neat, panoramic and claustrophobic-free views of the road.. about the track it was jazzed up from the start back in the '50s by fabulous coltrane

A typical Toyota with a really really cheap interior

Have you seen the interior of any variant of the Ford Falcon or a Holden Commodore? The Prius' interior is beautiful by comparison!

This car is rubbish. if you want to spend all the time you drive thinking about how green you can be or whatever then you shouldnt be driving. This car's engine is rubbish. its practicality is rubbish. the looks are rubbish. and its not actualy cheap. so i dont see why you should buy this. and its not all that green as you think. ALOT more cars get better fuel efficiency than this that have alot bigger engines and more practical. so in the end. Rubbish. go buy an audi.

"if you want to spend all the time you drive thinking about how green you can be or whatever then you shouldnt be driving."

Right... So as long as I think what you'd prefer me to, then you'll allow me to drive?

dude what are you, 11? one might find the prius bland or a snobbish statement for demagogues, but it definitely is very far from being crap, it is a sophisticated piece of engineering that deserves its credit even if most car enthusiasts don't have it on their wish list

Not a bad car, but Toyota need to offer a direct rival to the Civic Hybrid. Compared, the Prius is more expensive, worse handling and drive quality and it looks ugly. In my opinion, they need to push the Prius to compete with the Insight and maybe develop a Corolla Hybrid (I would still chose the Civic, but I'm sure others would prefer the Toyota).

The Civic isn't a full hybrid like the Prius (can't run in electric mode only) hence it's cheaper technology. The looks are purely subjective, I personally find this arrow shaped new design very attractive, as for the handling there is no data available yet. In any case you don't go chiseling tires around the bends with this kind of vehicle, do you?

I mean the common handling and ride quality used in city streets. The ride quality when only the electric motor is running is poor in the Prius. I didn't believe this claim until I drove one myself - it just didn't feel "right".

I might be mistaken, but I believe that Honda deliberately avoided the electric-only mode because of it's perceived flaws with the current technology.

Don't get me wrong though, if the Honda hybrids weren't available and the Prius was a little bit cheaper (which it will, in time) I'd own one. I might think it's ugly, but aesthetics are the worst reason to purchase or avoid a car.

I just think Toyota need to develop a car which is one step up from the Prius and price their vehicle more competitively. If I didn't already own a Civic Hybrid, I'd wait for the Insight - Toyota needs an edge over Honda to grab me.

I always find it hard to take Toyota's green image seriously when there still buliding POS like the Landcruiser & Tundra that drink massive amounts of petrol.

Toyota is catering for a wide audience. Hybrid technology is still in the early stages so fitting their larger vehicles with weaker hybrid engines would lose the market for such cars. If you consider that those sort of cars are ideally used to tow and for large loads, a hybrid set-up would be far from ideal. Especially at this point in time, the last thing on any manufacturer's mind is narrowing their market.

Really funny how all you keep saying Toyota designs are rubbish. Have you noticed that even with its design, Toyota keeps on breaking sales records. Why can't all your "beautiful cars" beat Toyota's? There's really one answer to that. Toyota build cars wanted or loved by its customers, not cars designed to please "critics". So all you critics out there buy non-Toyotas, you might just make them no.1.

Reason, Toyota has castrated itself. It stopped making sports cars to increase its reliability numbers. They also charge bundles for extras. By charging a lot to get extra luxuries fewer fully loaded cars are sold, and thus reliability numbers increase. They also castrated their designs, by creating non aggressive cars with smaller engines they end up catering to a much larger market that doesn't really care about performance.
