GM has rejected an offer to sell it's German brand Opel.

The German solar energy company SolarWorld has made an offer to GM to buy its Opel brand, including all of its plants in Germany, saying it was ready to provide a cash sum of 250 million euros and bank credit lines of 750 million. It also promised a 1 billion euro payout to all Opel staff in Germany. SolarWorld said it planned to turn Opel into the first "green" car company.

GM promptly dismissed the proposal.

"This is pure speculation. We are not going to comment on that. Opel is not for sale," Karin Kirchner, a spokeswoman for GM Europe in Zurich, Switzerland, told Reuters.

GM is in dire need of cash. It has just secured a 1 billion euro loan guarantee from the German government to sustain operations in Germany for the Opel brand. GM is also lobbying the US government for a 25 billion US dollar bailout package for the Big 3 US automakers based in Michigan.

Many analysts believe GM will have to shed several of its brands if it is to survive. And GM has been selling off assets to raise cash, including liquidating its stake in Suzuki Motor earlier this week for 230 million US dollars.

Opel has been a part of GM since 1929.

it would be a shame if Opel was dragged down by american GMs failure... GM get turned down by the american government and they refuse a 1 billion offer. can they really afford to be picky at the moment?

U.S. car makers are dumb as we can imagine.... GM will murder this traditional german brand.

By the way: German goverment wants to buy Opel, an lead it as a state brand.... It would be the best oppinion...

I also hope GM will sell Opel to Germans,...insignia is not enough to rescue GM and GM will get opel down, if not now that in a second time in the future

Clowns...They really deserve to go bankrupt and shut down. But you know what, when they are bankrupt Opel will be much cheaper to buy, i would be surprised if in a month's time they will even get half of this offer for Opel, hell this offer is big enough to buy all of GM's shares, kind of pathetic that they turned it down and then the US Government turned them down. IN UR FACE!

German government pledges to provide Opel with 1 billion euros in loan guarantees. If GM crisis will deepen and Opel will not be able to reimburse the loans guaranteed by the German government, it is likely that Opel become a 100% German state owned brand. Anyway, GM should consider selling some of its brands (as Ford did) and not only beg for money. It is peculiar to see that a brand owned by an American company (GM) beg for a substantial help from the German government, and not the German automotive manufacturers.

sell. sell. sell...

Opel could up its brand image if sold to SolarWorld... and GM is just holding on Opel, then badge engineer them into 10 other "brands" which costs plenty of money. It's time to release some brands and streamline their products.

What would any sale of Opel mean for Vauxhall, who have plants in the UK but take most of their cars from Germany and Spain...?
