 2010 Nissan Cube Revealed
2010 Nissan Cube

On sale in Japan November 2008

The new generation Nissan Cube is now ready to melt any compact car fan's heart residing in Japan. Launched ahead of other markets, the Cube will be available on Japan sales floors from 26th November 2008, North America in spring 2009 and the rest of the world by autumn/fall 2009.

Following its very successful sales record, the Cube has sold almost a million examples since its launch in 1998 and the third installment you see here seeks to continue this tradition. Cube is all about design and comfort, compactness yet spaciousness. Many changes have obviously taken place, most of which we don't have enough space for.

The gist of it says the Cube is wider than previous generation car, offering things like a jacuzzi-like interior for comfort, rear passengers sit like cinema-goers with the windshield as the screen, so they are also able to see goings on around them. The large glass roof panel ensures an airy feeling, adding to the open-space feeling. The Cube is less than four metres long, giving drivers a turning circle among the best in class of 4.6 metres. Nissan's first radio/CD combo with rear view monitor is installed, so is a funky push button starter.

Cube's 1.5-litre engine is a low-fuel-consumption, good response star that can be driven either on two wheels or on all four with the e-4WD system. The latter has a standard XTRONIC CVT mechanism. Prices range between ¥1,449,000 ($14,971) and ¥1,911,000 ($19,744) for the 2WD and ¥1,687,350 ($17,433) to ¥1,928,850 ($19,928) in 4WD.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today revealed the all-new, third generation of its highly successful Nissan Cube in launch events in Japan, the United States and Europe. The fully redesigned Cube continues the iconic "cubic" styling of the previous generation, adding a higher level of refinement and polish inside and out. Sales of the new Cube begin in Japan on Nov. 26, followed by North American in the spring of 2009, and Europe and other global markets in fall 2009.

Originally launched in 1998, the Cube has sold nearly one million units to date in Japan. The latest version maintains the distinctive exterior styling that is instantly recognizable as the Cube, such as the asymmetric rear end, while pursuing a simpler, more universal design for its debut on the world stage. It offers greater comfort, a larger cabin and a host of innovative interior details such as sofa-like seating, a large glass roof panel that extends over the driver's seat for an open, airy view of the outside environment, and a shoji-style roof shade that fills the cabin with gentle light. Despite its increased roominess, the new Cube remains less than four meters long, providing big utility within a small physical footprint. With its excellent visibility and maneuverability, along with smooth performance and high fuel efficiency, the new Cube is a high-performance daily driver created to be enjoyed by value-conscious buyers worldwide.

"The new Cube is designed for people who imagine a life less ordinary, who have grown tired of the never-ending pursuit of faster, more powerful, more outrageously styled cars," said Yosuke Iwasa, Segment Chief Product Specialist. "The quieter, more harmonious qualities of the Cube have attracted interest not only among young people, but for those in every walk of life. While carrying forward the concept of the original Cube, this latest edition has advanced significantly, including offering far greater comfort."

"The new Cube is a refined car of universal quality and appeal, that can compete without 'makeup' or excessive decoration," said Seiji Watanabe, Associate Product Chief Designer. "The development concept took the approach of 'purifying' the Cube design, rather than "evolving' it. A jagged rock, for instance, loses its edges and takes on a polish as it travels down a river. This is the sort of refinement we wanted for the new Cube. We worked to simplify its exterior, using fewer lines and widening certain areas. We allowed the Cube design to refine itself, moving closer to nature and suggesting human warmth. The resulting 'purer, more peaceful' design is just what we wanted. It is a vehicle for people who are not being influenced by others, who go their own way, and enjoy interactions with friends in a welcoming atmosphere."

Following are the details of the Cube. The features and specifications listed are for the Japanese version and may vary for other global markets.

Is that a steeting column mounted gearshift? And they plan to bring this to Europe with a feature last laughed out of the continent in the 70s?

Column mounted in the auto model, no doubt. What was that company that just re-invented this old trick... oh yeah, Merc!

Um, no, its was BMW who put it there for the 7-series. The last Cube had a bench front seat, not possible for the US market even with only two seat belts because the lawyers are no doubt afraid someone will sit there and fly through the windscreen in a frontal collision. For an automatic with no manu-matic function, it does work well while freeing up console space for a roomier interior in a small car. We seem to like paddle shifters, so why not the whole selector being reachable with your hands on the wheel?

Er, why is it the '2010' Nissan Cube yet it goes on sale in 2008, 2009 latest...

yes, I so hate these marketing schemes that make the car sound so futuristic, meanwhile the car is designed in 2005-2007 and goes on sale NOW already in 2008.

It goes on sale in spring 2010. By US law, anything on sale as of January 2, 20XX can be called a 200XX+1 model. Since that's already 5-6 months after most '09 models come out, it makes sense (and helps resale value) to push the model year forward. It would then have a long first model year and normalize for '11. It also means, however, that it needs to comply with all new regulations (safety, emissions, etc.) due for 2010, so the buyer wins.

Damn it! When I heard they were making a left hander I was looking forward to it...but there's something wrong with it! The eyes are too squnity and the bumpers make it look like it had too much botox injection! The CUBE grew up from a cute 2 year old to a rowdy 5 year old... But...I'll still probably buy it though with the hope that there will be numerous dress up options to make it look better...

I'll miss the outgoing 2nd generation. This does look like a cartoon, whereas the current model looks a little more honest. And where are the cool colors like the powder blue and light celery yellow of the current models? Ordinary colors like metallic red and bright blue are so, well, ordinary. And yawn, a grey interior. The Kia Soul looks cooler and has way more choices in personalization. And Scion might as well be Buick at this point...
