2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid Pricing to Start at $38,995 (U.S.)
2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid

Chevrolet Silverado is responding to the pocket-blasting fuel problem faced by millions of American passenger truck drivers, even family car drivers. The new Silverado Hybrid begins production in December and should be in showroom floors by January 2009, at a base price of $38,995, including destination charge of $975. The charge applies to 2WD models with the 1HY package.

Crew cab fans can also celebrate since the Silverado Hybrid is also offered in this body style, as well as a 4WD option. A (332 hp / 247 kW), 6.0-litre V8 gas engine forms the basis of GM's two-mode hybrid system in this case, where electro mode can allow for all-electric driving of up to 30mph (48 km/h). Two-wheel-drive models can realize around 21mpg city driving and 22mpg on the highway, with the 4WD option giving back 20mpg.

Inside the car comforts are not excluded, with leather trim and park assist as added goodies, at a price.

Chevrolet today announced pricing for the 2009 Silverado Hybrid - the only full-size hybrid pickup on the market. It starts at $38,995, including a $975 destination charge, for 2WD models with the 1HY package. The MSRP does not reflect a $2,200 federal tax credit that applies to many customers who purchase the Silverado Hybrid.

The Silverado Hybrid delivers fuel economy comparable to many midsize sedans, but with the cargo and towing capability expected from a full-size truck. It is offered in the crew cab body style and also available with 4WD.

Production begins in December 2008, with delivery to dealers expected in early 2009. All models come with an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid component warranty.

"For customers who need a full-size truck, but want much better fuel economy, the Silverado Hybrid is the clear answer," said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet. "It offers over 40-percent greater efficiency in city driving and a 25-percent overall increase in fuel economy, without compromising power or towing capability."

The Silverado Hybrid uses GM's patented two-mode hybrid system and a powerful 6.0L gas V-8 to deliver highly efficient performance - including all-electric driving up to 30 mph (48 km/h). That allows fuel savings to be realized even when the truck is fully loaded or towing a trailer. It has a 6,100-pound (2,767 kg) towing capacity.

EPA-estimated fuel economy for 2WD models is 21 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway; 4WD models are estimated at 20 mpg in city and highway driving. That mileage, combined with a 26-gallon (98 L) fuel tank, delivers a cruising range of more than 500 miles with 2WD models and more than 470 miles with 4WD models.

Well equipped

Silverado Hybrid 1HY models are based on the popular Silverado 1LT package and include popular equipment options such as the heavy-duty towing package, locking rear differential, EZ Lift tailgate and lock, and 18-inch wheels. Also included are automatic climate control, steering wheel audio controls and Bluetooth phone capability.

Equipment that is specific to the hybrid model includes:

  • 6.0-liter V-8 engine (332 hp / 247 kW)
  • Low rolling resistance tires
  • Hybrid ornamentation
  • Soft tonneau cover
  • Standard head curtain side air bags

The Silverado Hybrid also comes with standard head curtain side air bags.

In addition, a Silverado Hybrid 2HY package is offered. It includes more features and amenities such as a navigation radio, leather-trimmed seating, a hard tonneau cover, rear parking assist and more. It has a MSRP of $45,130 (including destination charge).

wow, a truck getting 21 mpg in the city? The only german cars that can beat that, are a couple diesel cars, and audi/vw's tiny 2.0 liter cars. And thats only by a couple mpg. 6.0L V8's ftw.

Yeah 21mpg starting a 5mile drive with full batteries. You think this thing would get 21mpg for too long? The batteries would get drained very fast, and then that big v8 has to move a 6000lb car + power a generator. Stats can be made to say anything especially in hybrids, I know that a 2003 Golf TDI gets 57mpg over a 2300km test. This thing is a crock of $hit, just like any GM product. I'm surprised that even in desperate times with low sales they still charge you a destination charge on which you pay tax. They should get rid of that on all their cars instead of pumping out these pieces of $hit.

22mpg? Oh my god, like thats just mind-blowingly good, even the smallest car in europe struggles to approach that... this vehicle alone will single-handedly reverse the years of stupid people ignoring GMs obviously superior vehicles in favour of rubish like BMWs and save GM from it's immense debts

interested to know where you get your fuel economy stats from, a new bmw 740i series does 11.2 l/100ks compared to this thing's 11.0 on combined cycle. and that's a big call saying a bmw is rubbish - you might not like the look of them, and you might not get the point of the x6, but calling them rubbish is downright foolish if you've ever driven one

isn't a V8 hybrid a bit like a glow-in-the-dark stealthsuit? ie, kind of pointless?

ROFL @ your analogy and I concur with your thinking ... we can only hope that as GM and Ford are both teetering on the brink of extinction, realise the error of their ways and stop producing such obscenely large vehicles no matter what power source they use in them.

A hybrid in a truck is a great idea. Anybody that knows anything about electric motors know that you get 100% torque at 0 rpm. No gas or diesel can do that. This truck should have the same get up and go as a diesel but with cheaper fuel. I don't understand why some people are comparing a truck to a car like the golf. I would like to see a golf move a 6000lb trailer. Remember people buy trucks because the need the hauling capacity. Now as long at it actually work it will be a good seller.
