VW Engine are these engines the same or what??? The A4L will come with VW/Audi's 2.0 liter TFSI engine tuned to a 180 horsepower output, as well as the 3.2 liter V6 FSI with 265 hp.

VW, Skoda, SEAT, Audi share the same engines.

Btw, it's not like BMW even has turbo engines in this class yet. Ever even driven a TSI or a TFSI?
November 17, 2008 2:54 pm
 Freude120 Freude120
don't you worry, BMW's turbo system is so much more superior than that of Audi. It has no turbo lag and all that crap. That's why the 3.5l turbo in the BMW 135i and 335i and other models won the International Engine of the Year and taht no Audi's or VW has ever won. So don't come compare engine advancements here because Audi's VW engines are way behind, and I mean far far away. The engines in VW can be compared to engines like Kia and Hyundai. BMW's engines are engines that Ferrari hope they can build.

Freude: Umh, I'll ask you again, ever driven a TSI or a TFSI? No turbo lag to talk of in them, not to mention the twin-charged versions. The low end-grunt of it is pretty much in analogy with an old swirl chamber diesel. Obviously your knowledge of the technical aspects of these engines is quite low, as you seem to think that for example the EA888 with it's variable valve timing_and_lift, 150 bar GDI, turbocharger and very low internal drag is somehow not an up-to-date engine. Care to eloborate? Also, I'm not mocking BMW. They're doing terrific things with their throttle-less engines and twin charging, not to mention the diesels. However, due to their head-start, I see VW as implementing - for example - the VGT first in the industry. Btw. the Hyundai Gamma and Kappa engines aren't that bad either...

VGT in combination with GDI, that is.

The reason that they use the same engines is because they are just such good engines. The 4 cylinder engines have recieved the engine of the year award for the past few years. They are far superior to the 4 cylinder engines used in any BMW as well, so why not use them?

Why do they need larger cars considering they are not the tallest people plus they have the one child policy? "often used as transport for executives or as company vehicles for higher-ranking managers." Come on, seriously?

not oly is the car butt ugly and boring in general. Not mentionin the front grille that's like a fish mouth forever open, the face of the car looks like it has down syndrome. Shame, we have a sick little fish on hand...Now you tell me how this is compete against the muscular 3 Series that's the iconic sports sedan, that's superior in looks, performance, quality (definately better than VW quality), reliability, style, service.
November 17, 2008 2:21 pm
 xenomorph xenomorph
Oh that is truly pathetic if you think the 3 series can even come close to the A4's design. The 3 series starts with the ugly pig nostrils, followed by the gaping, wide front air intake. Then there are the boggle eyed headlights which look awkward and stupid, followed by a very busy body covered in lines that dont add to the character of the car at all, all they do is make the side profile cluttered. The greenhouse area is also high and bulbouse which makes the car appear shorter, higher and fatter than it already is. Finally we come to one of the worst angels of the 3 series, the rear. The rear taillights are small and pathetic, squeezed in, they look like two red butt cheeks in all honesty, the rear tailpipes are unattractive as well and so is the boot. The fact is that BMW literally implied that it had failed with the 3 series sedan in terms of design by attaching the front end of the coupe onto the M3. The coupe is far better and obviously BMW knew that the standard front end of the 3 series would likely just be too revolting to be part of the M series. I'm sure people would have been deterred by the sedans front end if it were left on the M3. So there you have it gpkh/fruede120, thats the truth about the 3 series sedan, the worst looking car in its segment. The A4 has a clean sweeping dynamic futuristic appearance to it that the 3 series fails to reach out to in every way. In fact all BMW models fail miserably in terms of styling compared to all Audi's. In fact almost everything on a BMW is inferior on some level. Whether it be interior design, quality of the materials used, crafsmanship etc. Once again you have soiled yourself gpkh/fruede120.

Even the Jetta and Passat look way better, not to mention the main rivals like the C and 3. You see, this is what you get when you build cars usin some parts, you design according to accomodate the parts from Seat and Skoda and VW. There's no freedom to design what's best like in BMW and Merc's case. That's why you see things are out of proportio: look at the engine placements, look at the suspensions, look at the overhangs. It's truely a VW

Sorry to tell you guys but the Audi A4 was voted Car of the year by several magazines. You can say BMW = Best all you want but people who actually know a thing or two about engineering and design beyond a badge on the hood realize that Audi are developing far quicker than BMW in recent years. Just look at the R8, its rivaling cars that cost $100,000 more than its list.
November 17, 2008 3:04 pm
 xenomorph xenomorph
Oh yes the R8 is the worst in its class. You probably say that because it?s something you have heard all your life. You are clearly delusional and pathetic. The A4 3.2L quattro was tested by Edmunds as well and it went through their slalom at the same speed as the B7 RS4. They also reported it had incredible braking power. Obviously you don't know anything about cars, so it really is our duty to relieve you of your incompetence. Just imagine what the B8 RS4 will be like seeing as the B8 3.2L Quattro can match some of its dynamic features. I can just picture you frothing at the mouth shuddering uncontrollably at the thought of the B8 RS4. Try not to have a seizure; I really shouldn't worry you so much about things like this, it?s all just too much to take in really.

 AfterDawn AfterDawn
Oh good grief Freude120, you really need to settle down. And please lay off the caps. Isn't there anything meaningful in your life you can be excited about apart from this? Yes, the VW Group does share an unholy number of parts across the range but it still sells them cars for the larger majority of people that are not aware of that. And I'm not a fan of Audi interiors but a great number of auto journalists/people say it's quite a nice place to be and it does look like quality work. I wouldn't buy the A4 but it's still a good car. The LWB A4 is China-specific and won't be sold anywhere else. The Chinese market is big enough that manufacturers can make cars according to the wishes of the masses. I may be wrong here but I think MB will be selling the '10 E-Class in LWB form there. It wouldn't work anywhere else in the world because it wouldn't make sense for the market and it would cannibalise S-Class sales. But not in the People's Republic. Third point. Audi's exterior design language is first-rate. It is sufficiently minimal yet properly expressive. Their only failing is that all their cars look like photocopies in varying size of each other. They're still photocopies of a nice design but they need to work on that. Regardless, on the merits of design, I'd get an A4 far, far faster than I would a 3-series. The 3-series is now the entry level Toyota although Audi will take that crown if it continues to grow in popularity. I gather lots of unrestrained energy from your posts so if I were you, I'd direct it all away from WCF and put all my efforts into meeting Chris Bangle and worshiping at his feet singing praises of the sacredness of the Bangle-butt. Unless you're trolling. Then I unfortunately just wasted my time.

I don't understan what you mean by: The 3-series is now the entry level Toyota although Audi will take that crown if it continues to grow in popularity. Being popular means it is the best to majority, what's wrong with that?
November 17, 2008 6:59 pm
 AfterDawn AfterDawn
Freude, the LWB is just for the Chinese market. No where else. Even an LWB 5/E wouldn't make sense for the rest of the world. If there's sufficient market for a LWB A4 in China then it makes sense for Audi to sell just such a car. To the rest of us it seems weird but who cares? It's not Audi's problem if there's demand for it. And it's certainly not their problem if they're making money off it. Secondly, there's nothing wrong with being popular. But personally, if I were to buy one of these cars, I'd rather not have hundreds of them on the road. It just feels less special. The 3-series feels that way - like every Tom, Dick and Harry owns one. It feels like they all do it because that's what is in (even when that may not be true). It's why I hope MB's always stay just a tad more expensive - even though that doesn't translate into having some sort of advantage. It's just nice to know you won't be seeing your car everywhere you turn. My point is if I could, I'd think twice about buying an A4 right now because I'm beginning to see too many. The three-pointed star would be my first choice anyway. But that's just my preference. But ultimately, none of that even matters. Like others have noted, if you haven't test-driven/owned one, two or all three, then why waste your breath? I'm in no position to be buying any of these cars so beyond passing momentary, mild judgments on each marque's creation (to feel some sort of lofty self-importance), I'm not going to lose any sleep on what they do. If anything, they're all good enough anyway. So make some tea, drink that and if you can/don't already own one, try and buy a BMW but no need to get all hotheaded in here about Audi making a profit.

Freude is just a little boy whose parents probably own a BMW. He is too ignorant to know that he's being an annoying troll and that he doesn't deserve to be taken seriously. Get a life. You don't see Audi fans bashing every single BMW that comes up on this website. Grow up. We get it. You don't like Audi. "R8 is worst in class". That's why it won so many awards, a number of them being 'car of the year' awards. When was the last time BMW even built something in that class. Well enough. I'm wasting my time trying to reason with a little troll like you. Hopefully, you'll grow up one day.

Well boys, with regard to the Audi vs. BMW argument, shall we put this to rest once and for all? Just search out the facts on the Internet and decide for yourselves. If you research every racing series that both Audi and BMW have ever competed in together, you will discover that Audi has so thoroughly dominated that BMW drops out and stops competing or lodges a formal protest that Audi has an unfair advantage with quattro, and attempts to have Audi banned from the series. Look it up and convince yourselves. I have owned at least one of each of these marques in every series (sedans and sports cars, no SUV?s), as well as, 4 Porsches and personal experience in both racing and daily driving has proven that the Audi is the superior machine over the BMW in every class segment. The only advantage the BMW has ever been able to legitimately claim is the handling dynamics and the tossability of its rear drive. Today, with Audi?s new quattro 40/60 rear traction bias and sports differential, even that advantage has been completely negated. Audi?s racing prowess has existed from the very beginning and continues today. As far back as pre-World War II the Auto Union (Audi) Silver Arrows completely dominated Gran Prix racing (forerunner of F1), dominating over both Mercedes Benz and BMW. The Auto Union Silver Arrows were designed by no other than Ferdinand Porsche! And finally, there's no getting around the fact that Audi will forever be the "A" car and BMW the "B" car. IMHO contributors to this forum who express fanatical opinions, but who have never driven either marque, let alone driven them in competition, are simply a source of mild amusement.
