BMW is counting on Americans, currently the world's largest consumers of mobile metal, to retaliate against oversized SUVs and their associated fuel bills by getting into the X6. X6 Active Hybrid that is, when it goes to market in 2009 after its public unveiling at Detroit International Motor Show in January.

These are the latest pics of final stages of testing. The car will use a Two-Mode-Hybrid-Concept which is a two-electric-engine concept that BMW says will be able to run 100 percent on electric power. You can see the upsized power dome bulging at the front to tell this X6 ain't exactly standard issue. A saving of some 20 percent in fuel is expected from the X6 Hybrid.

Hey guys, how can you miss this! I don't think that this is a hybrid. Look at the power dome, like M3. I think this is an M version of the X6. Look at the big exhaust at the rear and why would they hide a car that we've already seen on Motor Shows. The front fog light area is different for the Hybrid as seen on the shows. Yes the ride hight is quite high but why would you need a low ride hight when u're not testing track performance. I think BMW guys are being clever! Zee

the exhaust pipes are the same as on the x6 xdrive 50i there are spyshots of an M version here on the board and that one looks different to this version. the front and rear are full of camoflage and the exhaust is different. i think this one really is the hybrid version.

I've been waiting for this car to grow on me... no success thus far.

How do you know it's a hybrid, was the photographer within earshot of the car? I don't see anything to give an indication it's not just a conventional X6 testing a larger engine...of the petrol variety
