Chevy Cruze Based Daewoo Lacetti Launches in Korea

Chevy Cruze Based Daewoo Lacetti Launches in Korea
Daewoo Lacetti 2009

Producing 114 horsepower

The highly anticipated Chevrolet Cruze is still several months away from reaching consumers in Europe and the United States but in Korea the model has just gone on sale.

Called the Daewoo Lacetti, it is virtually identical to the Cruze and offers us the glimpse of what we can expect with the car launches here. Power comes from a 1.6-liter engine which produces 114 hp and can be equipped with either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.

Being a true global car, Cruze production is slated to take place in Russia, the US, and South Korea. As of now the model is scheduled to launch in Europe this March and as a 2010 model in the United States but with GM's recent financial crisis both launches could potentially be delayed.

they may not win any competitions, but for some people, this is all they can afford in terms of a new car if you don't like it, the chances are it isn't aimed at you anyway

Isn't it the other way round? The Daewoo Lacetti is actually rebadged as the Chevy Cruze? Will we see this being thrashed round the Top Gear track in the next series...? ;-)

+2 This car looks pretty clean, it may have taken cues from its rivals, but i would certainly buy it as long as its still slightly cheaper compared to its rivals.

this car is actually designed and built by Daewoo in S. Korea (which is owned by GM), and rebadged as Chevy. pretty cool looks, but engine with no power....

The Daewoo brand is only for Korea. I believe this brand is more popular in Korea than Chevrolet. Most non-luxury GM cars sold in Korea are badged as Daewoos, this includes the Korean market Holden Statesman and Saturn Sky.

Haha, you gotta be kidding me. This car is already production-ready, it's launched in Korea, and launching next year in Europe as a 2010 model... ...so they went to the future and bring this thing back to 2008? Stupid marketing.

Americans are so fricking proud of their cars, when a high percentage of GMC's are korean made vehicles. That's a fugli car

I don't see what all the critism is about, but I bet that there would be much less of it if this car wasn't badged as a Daewoo. Seriously, this looks much more interesting than most other compact sedans, and the design isn't even cheap-looking, but rather agressive and sporty. And those who say the rear end is a copy of that of the Civic are only displaying their lack of knowledge in the variance of car design. Yes, the shapes are vaguely similar but just because they're red doesn't mean that Daewoo (or Chevy) intentionally copied Honda. And even the interior is pretty good looking for a compact car. Unfortunately, too many people are too ignorant to look past a badge.

For a vehicle built to a price point I think it's very impressive. The interior looks way nicer than anything I've ever come across in a low-price family sedan. I have to agree about some of the negative responses. They see the badge and don't give it near as much credit as it deserves as if it is being compared to something that costs twice as much. Remeber this is slotted to compete with the Honda Civic, not a BMW!

looks okay for a cheap car... korean version reminds me even more of the saturn ion, but the overall design seems even better balanced than the one with an over the top chevy grille.
