The rumor mill has been running rampant with speculation in regards to a new entry-level Porsche, but according to a recent report the entry-level model won't be a step below the Boxster but rather a four-cylinder version of it.

Little is known about the new entry-level Boxster but it is set to become the brand's most economical product offering according to sources familiar with the project. With Porsche quickly gobbling up control of Volkswagen, it would seem a logical choice for the new Boxster to come equipped with a version of Audi's 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a power rating above 200 hp. The current base Boxster comes with a 2.7 liter engine which produces 245 hp and 201 lb.-ft. of torque.

Besides the addition of the entry-level model, the source also indicates that the new 2011 Boxster will be significantly lighter than today's model.

Plz don't porsche! We have the need to think porsche as a dream car not as an audi a3 with a shiny armor. What's next, a 1000cc city car?

Who said anything about the Audi A3? This is just a different engine option in the bespoke Boxster, which shares much more in common with the 911 than anything else.

Porsche is becoming just another German luxury brand nothing more. That special something has disappeared along with profit maximization. It's sad that Porsche has sold its soul as classic sports car maker.

A 4 pot Boxster... I never knew there is some sense of humour in Porsche.

i think this is a good idea because u can have the power output of a bigger engine into a smaller one plus it would be easy to run to. i mean look at the 1.4 tsi engine in a golf it pushes out 180bph from a 1.4 lol

There used to be a 4 cylinder version of the 911, designated a 912......

Look to your history.

As for how this affects Porsche, you should all consider that it is not the engine that makes the car a Porsche but the ride, handling and engineering. Putting a 4 cylinder engine in a Porsche makes the product more reachable, opening the product to new customers who are then more likely to upgrade later thus meaning more development cash for the rare low volume specials such as GT2s etc. Remember that the only reason Enzo Ferrari made road cars was to fund the race team. Similarly Porsche needs volume sellers to make the rare breeds. It is sad that no one seems to understand modern day car manufacturing economics. Cars cannot be manufactured to meet modern day requirements on a shoe string. Hence why companies such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley cannot survive alone with small volumes and need partnerships with larger more dynamic OEMs.

True. But perhaps the bigger issue is a switch to inline from boxer engines. I am not as bothered by the number of cylinders as the layout.

I wonder whether Porsche and Subaru could develop a smaller Flat 4 together...? Wishful thinking perhaps.

well said m4.. there have been numerous 4 cyl. Porsches, this is nothing new. remember the 914, 550, 924, 914, 356, 944, 968 and the 912. about half of those being I-4. as far as engine layout, Porsche does more than the boxer engine. I dont remember anyone complaining with the Carrera GT's V-layout, then theres the Cayenne and the new Panamera which did dissapoint me from Porsche but understand them reaching out to new markets. whether they sold their soul or simply acting as business depends on how you look at it.

as far as my opinion goes, I hope the mid-engine turbo-4 goes to Audi as the next TT as speculated. but with Porsche taking over the VAG group they may not want the added competition to their cayman and boxter. Either way i think it will be great car despite of who releases it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next Boxster offered a 4 cylinder but I WOULD be surprised if they didn't retain a boxer layout for it. The boxer design is so vastly superior to other layouts but it is difficult to install in most other types of vehicles. New technology can make the 4 cylinder version powerful and the boxer layout will keep it smooth but with a distinctive Porsche sound. I don't see any problems with this at all for an entry level car. I imagine it should be fairly easy for Porsche to chop of two cylinders and tweak everything else. Everyone else should stop their whining and consider the possibilities and benefits.

and there is the reason why Porsche have bought more and more of VW shares, I would think they want access to VW Audi engines and I bet the 4 pot comes straight out of one of those cars, a sign of things to come i reckon.

I owned a 4 cyl 912 and loved it. I had a 914/6 and loved it. I have had a few more but I am now in a C2S with PDK and I really love it. Don't be bitter if the proposed car doesn't fit your particular wants or needs. If everybody liked the asme thing we would have one car with one engine in one color.

Lighter weight and with a perfectly tunable 4cylinder turbo engine...I'd take that one over the 6cylinder boxer engine! A car is not about the numbers! (Horsepower...number of cylinders...0-60 times...etc.) A car is how it feels when you drive it...just like a woman.

m4martins summed up th economics. Look what has happened to sports cars over the many decades, how the uk is virtually a kit car maker (apart from A/Martin et al), how the load of rubbish MG, Lotus make, how the MX5 Mazda was what the MG should have been. Why shouldn't Porsche expand their range to embrace new potential customers whose pockets are not so deep for Boxters, Caymans 911 etc.?
