So I see that according to the spy shots, the sedan gets M-B's column mounted shifter from the S-Class and the coupe gets a floor mounted shifter. It seems that this immediately removes/reduces any thought of the sedan wanting to be "sporty". I'm not sure about the rear wheel and fender flares on the new design but maybe this will grow on me in person. I think M-B is in a spot close to where Jag has been in that they are blessed and cursed by how people have associated them for so long. Blessed and cursed by a certain visual identity that people expect with the brand. Personally, I love the timeless functionality, Germanic look and elegance of the 1977-1985 model and the 1986-1995. The best looking of almost any Benz sedans.

This seems to mean that (a.) the sedans and wagons will all be automatic, and (b.) the coupe is C-Class based. This is the first time I noticed that the sedan has the rear fender flourish (on the rear door). Needless overstyling, imho... an SUV cue on an otherwise clean (if plain) sedan and svelte coupe. Not as bad as the cartoony fender flares on the S, though. Those will look evenmore ridiculous as time goes by. I agree, the W123 and W124 are among the most timelessly attractive cars ever. They still look good, and like MBs.

I agree with machida. Even after all these years, the W123 and W124 still look good. It's like M-B learned how to create the timeless car design for those models. I am SO curious to know how the new E's will perform dynamically. I know they are a little sportier compared to their predecessors, but I think M-B still leans toward the luxury equation. I think they are content to let BMW be the handling/feel champs. I haven't had a chance to drive a new Benz lately to know if they still have "that Benz feel" that they used to. This perhaps has changed just like everything else.

Should it be? For the past few years everyone, especially the Germans, have been trying to be more like everyone else. The result is that the cars are more similar to each other and yet further from their true brand identity. Is this a good thing? It's not like an MB handled poorly, or that the steering in a 5-series was unpleasantly heavy. They just had their own character. Yes, it's nice that MBs handle better now and BMWs ride better now and Audis, well, do something better now (it used to be style and value but then the grille ate the car, and the new A4 costs as much as a 3 or C). But I kind of miss when each brand had its own look and feel. And there was always something cool about seeing an AMG DTM racecar with a stand-up star hood ornament, or the feeling that every BMW drove just like a roomier 2002 with its soul intact.

I own a 2007 Bluetec E and it is the best car I have ever driven. I'm not impressed with the 2010. It reminds me of the Chrysler 300. MB is supposed to lead, not follow.
