Final McLaren SLR Roadster Heading for the U.S.
Mercedes Mclaren SLR

Set to be auctioned off

Production of the Mercedes McLaren SLR is starting to wind down, and now comes word that the final SLR roadster will be auctioned off in an online charity event.

To make the final SLR roadster even more exclusive, the company has gone out of their way to give it unique touches. The exterior features sienna pearl super metallic paint which is only available on this SLR roadster. The special paint has metallic elements that are three times more reflective than standard metallic paint, which gives the car a deep copper appearance. The richness of the exterior is also echoed in the special braking system which features gold brake calipers. Inside the roadster has unique tobacco brown composition leather with black accents.

The final SLR roadster will be featured in the Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Catalog and is set to be auctioned off on November 20, 2008. Any profits above the car’s price of $529,500 will be donated to St Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Production of the best car ever to be built is getting towards the end. Thank you Mercedes Benz, thank you McLaren for this unique work of art! This car is eternal. I'll keep one in my heart.

I honestly dont mean to be funny, but can someone tell me what the SLR has achieved for the automotive industry that another car hasn't already achieved. Im being totally sincere, just wanna hear your responses. IMO, it was a great car but not really a benchmark that would go down in history, well except for the fact that McLaren and Merc produced the car. Mechanically and technically not a brilliant as it could have been...

TSLi, the SLR is unlike its supercar competitors in that it combines speed with luxury. Unlike the LP640, Zonda, CCX, etc., the SLR would be usable on a day-to-day basis - it even has an automatic gearbox! The only other supercar that is similarly comfortable and fast would be the Veyron, imo. As one Jeremy Clarkson said: "The SLR was designed so that you could cruise to the Nurburgring...do a mind blowing lap, then cruise back home."

carbonsigma you've hit on it - the biggest thing about the slr is the auto gearbox and the whole concept behind it. it's a relaxing, boring old mercedes when you just want to get home from a long day at work. then on the weekend it jumps up and is just as much fun as any other supercar

You all are right. I admit it is a great looking, great sounding car. I had a bit of difficulty seeing where exactly McLaren had contributed, cos I always saw it as a very quick Mercedes. But when you look at the lap times, on Top Gear, Nurburgring etc... you see that it is as fast as a Carrera GT, which almost the complete opposite of the SLR. In response to mmr66, The Veyron. Of course the price is a major factor, but when I first heard all those years ago that Merc and McLaren where making a car together, I imagined it would be unstoppable, rival-less and at the highest level of engineering perfection. Like the second coming of the McLaren F1. Even McLaren and Benz had their differences when designing the car as they wanted the car to achieve different things. i.e. Speed vs. Luxury. I guess I saw the SLR as more of a compromise between two parties to keep everyone happy, which is why I respect the Carrera GT more. However, the SLR shall be missed.

good point on the veyron, but it's nearly 3 times the price. i know price is trivial when you get to these sorts of prices, but still, it's a big difference. and a mercedes-mclaren car would always be a war between comfort and speed. if you wanted a second coming of the F1, you'd be better off with a bmw-mclaren (which is, essentially, what the F1 was). it's all down to what you like, really - i saw this and a carrera gt side by side a couple of years ago, and tell you what, i'd have taken the mcmerc without a second thought.

Mclaren and Mercedes may win on track, not on roads. SLR is a great car, probably underestimated, I am sure 90% of its customers buy it for its distinct striking looks.

I'm sorry, it's too much of a compromise to be an icon. McLaren and Mercedes butted heads and everyone who bought the car lost as a result. However fantastic it may be, it's always been flawed and overpriced. IMO, of course.
