[UPDATE] Toyota has issued the statement below regarding the unauthorized leaked 2010 Prius photos:

Many of you will have seen by now photographs on sites like PriusChat, Jalopnik and AutoblogGreen of a vehicle said to be the new Prius. We thought we’d take a moment to confirm that the car shown in these unauthorized photos – at least the ones we’ve seen so far - is indeed the new Prius. Sorry, we’re not able to provide details. Those will be forthcoming when the car is formally introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. What we can tell you, however, is this: This new Prius will retain all of the virtues of the model that precedes it. It’s about the same size as its forebear, but with more interior room and better fuel economy. But you expected nothing less, right?

After images of the 2010 Toyota Prius leaked onto PriusChat.com yesterday, the images quickly spread across the world wide net with a lot of speculation whether they were real or not. The intrepid gents over at Jalopnik.com had the opportunity this morning to sit down with Toyota PR, look them straight in the eye and put the question to them. After a few tense seconds of silence and a couple beads of breaking sweat, Toyota PR relented with a definitive answer, “Yes”. Charmed by the Jalops directness, Toyota even added the Prius will debut in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Jazzed with their scoop, the Jalops headed back to Starbucks to their office and put together a detailed comparative analysis between the current generation and the new 2010 Prius. Leave it to the intrepid Jalopniks to leave no stone unturned.

Check out the source link below for the analysis.

Oh my god! The front looks ok, but overall it's absolutely the same as the actual Prius! And what the hell is that horrible interior design?? It could be very high tech under the hood but with such a boring and ugly design, it just won't sell well! Hybrids have now become popular, they don't need a specific design (just to say "I'm different") anymore. Or at least, if you want to say so, be original! CRAP!

It will still sell, and how. Because people are in a panic about the recession and think that this is the answer. Why won't they buy a car instead? This clearly isn't a car. It's a toy of some sort. It should be made by Mattel, maybe then they'd make some money and not pull Scrabulous off Facebook. And yes, Toyota has now attained Porsche-levels of lethargy in design, rummaging for bits from the Corolla parts bin. Interior design by Bland McSoulless. And yet, every Hollywood star who still wants to make money will have at least two alongside their Range Rovers and Bentleys. If they know it's going to be that popular, why not put a bit of effort into it? Ech. Still not a car IMHO.

i don't get it, why would they do this! Why would toyota take the same body and add the corolla/matrix head lights

maybe cuz its the most roomiest, aerodynamic design?? don't mess with it unless it's broken. it might be ugly, but usually, all aerodynamic models are kinda like that. this prob after loads of research has the least drag possibly??

Certainly not as ugly as it could have been...but it's no looker either.

A sleeker, sportier evolution of the familiar Prius shape... not bad at all.

it's kinda not bad, but the front zoom picture seems to spot a totally diffrent headlight design than the 3/4 view.

this car is ugly the design is sooooo boring, nut i expect that of toyota, but that interior is just awful, its like they put the sterring wheel on the wrong side, in a 80's car. is this going to ba as amazingly eco friendly and economic as the last one (sarcasim)

I was driving current Prius last summer. The Worst Car Ever. btw: consumption about 8 - 9 l/100km.

So crappy design is the smallest problem of this car.

If u drive it pedal to the metal then your at 8 a 9 liters, if you do the same with another car your above 10 liters. i've driven the prius and could achieve sub 5liter consumption, you have to learn to drive the car efficiently.

that's it, so Prius is pointless :D drive ur car efficiently....

A new golf TDI is better on fuel than a prius, or the new A3/A4 TDI.

wow, disappointing if not more..what happened to the cool blue concept they showed 2 years ago where the headlights and the windscreen merged together and the roof was all glass, now that would have been an outstanding car! what T did is just bring the prius inline to the rest of teh corollas and co, and I thought they would create sth. like a prius sub brand, with that design its not going to work...

i dont believe this story for a second. yeah because Toyota execs are gonna break sweat over the "interogation" of some random individuals from a website?!!! give me a break! i dont even think this is the car that they'll sell in 2010. as for the interior? some crappy photo doesnt mean the thing in realty will be crap! and yes as mentioned before the headlight shots dont even match! reckon Toyota os having the last laugh.

just like the current Prius, but it has its own style... I think Toyota should have the Prius as a Prius and build a few different bodyshapes on the platform with different names

I would say "Come on prius, stop the global warming, save the world! You look adorable!" if i was a silly environmentalist. Hybrids are efficient but they wont save the world, even poute more than traditional cars during their production process. They are for SMUGS!

Speaking of aerodynamics. Check this out:

Think you fell for that Toyota hype! …think Toyota are full of it….!

Yeah Coefficient of Drag, i also doubt that the prius is the most aerodynamic car out there, BUT you have to remember that to calculate how aerodynamic a car is you multiply the coefficient of drag by the surface area of the car. So being the smallest car of that group even though it doesn't have the best CD it is the most aerodynamic.
