BMW X1 and X3 Development Continues

Don’t blink. Look again, think twice. Whatever. Your eyes aren’t fooling you. You really are looking at two different cars here, not one. Here we have the next BMW X3, due out in 2010, and the upcoming brand spanking new baby SUV, the BMW X1.

We’ve spied these two vehicles for a while now, several times each even. For the first time we saw the X1 in concept form at Paris this year and this confirmed our earlier reports that the X1 is more X3 than X6, meaning long back, more touring type vehicle than coupe SUV like the X6. Interestingly BMW has a tendency to reveal concept cars that resemble close to 90 percent what the actual production car will look like, so we pretty much know the form of X1 now. As per normal BMW tradition at least two new engines will debut with X1 and X3, the likeliest for the former being a four-cylinder petrol turbo motor.

It appears BMW is still putting its faith in the SUV regardless of recent sales charts that suggest the genre is feeling the worst pinch of a global economic downturn as far as the auto industry is concerned. But these Germans are going mini, as seen with X1 as well as MINI Crossover concept.

I'm sure there is still place on the market for an X4 which will be 2mm longer than X3 and 2mm shorter than X5, same with X2, so everyone can spend half of his life at the dealership trying to choose one of the almost identical SUVs.

Why do people need such vehicles? Why there is even such a market? Is it because we need those cars? or is it just companies trying to be innovative?

The X1 is the car with the larger air intake at the front, the X3 has a smaller air intake. Whatever BMW have tried to do with the looks though, htey are both going to be hideously ugly.

they may look ugly for you and very beautiful for other people .....so if you don't like this type of car you can buy another type its very simple :)

There is no point producing cars that compete against each other, they wont gain any sales, why isnt one of them the sporty alternative like an X6, that would make sense.

That's ugly. This is ugly. I'm ugly. You're ugle.

WTF? Get over it. A lot of people sure seem to love reading about new BMW's just so they can say how ugly they are. Get a life. Go look at Mercs and Audis if you don't like them. How can you even judge with all the pychadelic tape on it anyway?

And sales of "SUVs" are NOT down. Sales of cars that get crappy gas mileage are down. Hence all of the new smaller SUVs (X1 and X3) being developed. Some of us have families and tons of crap to carry around. Unfortunately we can't all drive Z4's and 3er coupes.

Excellent comment DSC_OFF... I agree 100%. Too many BMW haters just for the sake of it. They should get a life...
