That's all GM needs... three more poor selling brands to burden themselves. I just don't see how this would benefit either of them in long run. GM stands a better chance of survival looking at their own products and allowing natural selection to decide the survivors.

I agree with Ricky. I am not sure what Chrysler has that anyone else would want. For GM, it just sounds like more lame brands to have to carry.

I knew this was coming. Eventualy there is going to be just one large company, and thats what has to be done to even come close to Toyota. Since Ford is a POS automaker in USA and they refuse to bring Euro models home, the company will fall fast. In a future I see Germany versus Japan versus the rest of the world. The strongest survives.

You can blame the UAW for that.

That is why Ford doesn't bring the better cars to America

Somehow I don't see how that is going to work... You'll just end up with a loss making company twice the size...! There may be better synergies with Renault. Didn't Renault years ago once had some alliance with Chrysler / Dodge /Jeep? Wasn't it Renault who designed the first Jeep Cherokee? (whose basic design remained the same for decades). And wasn't the very first Dodge Caravan really based on the first Renault Espace...? Renault need a presence in the US for future survival. They may not want to do that via Nissan. Renault may also be able to bring some design flair to Chrysler products.

I don't know dude, most of the Chrysler products, have cool designs, the problem with them it's what is under the bodywork, the technology needs something new, and i can see the next Dodge Caliber on the Renault Megane platform, I can see the next Crossfire on the new Nissan 370Z platform, why not the Viper on Chrysler Firepower(u remember that cool concept)on the GT-R's sensational platform, and Renault could use the 300C platform for a new big size sedan witch they don't have right now. That should be cool, I mean GM have enough brands, to make it out of crisis and i bet they will make it ok, in fact I bet that in a few years, they will be back on top of the world, beating Toyota.

I agree with Rickyb and several others. I'm no economic expert but it just doesn't seem to make sense to me especially since GM is just starting to push out some decent products. I used to prefer Ford over the other domestic brands but they seem to be stuck now like GM used to be. GM is getting better and I haven't seen anything truly good out of Chrysler since the 300.

I think GM should look at what brands they could do without. Chevy, Cadillac, Pontiac I think are cool but that is all that they need and holden. ford got rid of jaguar and aston martin possibly mazda. GM should consider the same.

Mazda brings the bigest profit to Ford, and is the best seen, Jag and LR wore to, but when u need cash, u stop being rational

I wonder if we are going back to the days of a lot of small independent brands instead of many brands owned by a few companies.

awesome idea! gives them yet another chance to ax all employee benefits and retirement fonds and then put a big lid on both. oh shortly before that they might spin off the one or other brand name for nostalgics...check the British car industry for the template.

GM does not need Chysler's problems. GM is putting out some really good product lately and will continue to do so in the future. The only product Chrysler has that is better than a GM product is mini vans and that hardly worth a merger. A lot of people are starting to relies GM product are comparable if not better that the import competition. As long as they keep what they are doing up they will be fine in the future.

GM and Ford would be an excellent merger. Synergies among two companies that are heavily investing in European design, innovative technology, and quality engineering. Just cut off Ford's current N. American division. Chrysler, let Jeep stand alone and stop fighting.

To use the buzzword that led us into this economic meltdown - Where is the synergy?
