Hmm, not if you ask Gordon Murray. His view was that Daimler Benz insisted on stuff going on which means the car was seriously compromised anyway. At the time of luanch he ruled out a convertible because of the way that the carbon fibre birdcage running through the roof was integral to overall rigidity. So although the roadster may look great, you just know it's been hacked about so much it barely deserves a place next to the F1 in McLaren's history.

Since the release of the GT-R with is specs and prices, these cars only make sense to super milionairs that doesnt know what to do with their money. It´s a fine car but whith 4 or 5 times less money i can get better with the GT-R !!

true, but remember to people with this sort of money, its potentially more about the fun. this car is rear drive convertible with 800 nm and one of the meanest supercharged production engines and exhaust notes ever! who says sheiks dont want to lay some rubber every now and then?

in my opinion the normal slr looks much better the hard top i mean i saw the 722 and the normal one side by side at the lights the 722 looks ok but the old one was a beuaty.

This is a pointless edition. It cost more but doesn't deliver as much power and speed. And looks ugly. What's wrong with a standard version, isn't enough fast or beautiful. Mercedes-Benz has a selling problems with SLR's from quite some time, so they try to attract the Sheik's or Rich Russians who's buying everything what is released. I think the upcoming Speedster will be something special, for real racing drivers, for old Silver Arrows lovers, to end the production of SLR line.

The carbon fiber interior looks tacky, especially with the big chrome SLR plastered across the center. The weight of the Chrome badge and all the gloss to make the carbon fiber look shiny eliminates any possible weight savings through using carbon fiber in the first place. Pointless really.

never knew gloss weighed that much :P
BUT... i get what ur saying..
also, this car wasn't ever a light car anyways, so why change now with this model. Its a grand tourer really. not a hardcore racer like a ferrari F430 would be. which is more focused.

That extra thick gloss coat will double to triple the weight of the carbon. Like you said it isn't a hardcore racer, so why don't they put in more luxurious materials then triple gloss raw carbon?
September 29, 2008 11:59 pm
really?? hmm never knew that... whats in the shiny coat that makes it that heavy anyways??
September 30, 2008 2:40 am
most of the weight of carbon is not from the carbon fiber itself, it is from the epoxy that holds it together. To get a clear coat that looks like that you would need to triple the thickness of your carbon sheets. Gloss and paint are heavy, you never realize just how much weight painting a car adds until you realize how many buckets of paint you have used.

Another car I must buy! Black roof looks perfect. They should use it on stock SLR Roadster as well.

Man #1 to Man #2 : " ohhh what do u drive?"
Man#2 (with full confidence and arrogance): an SLR 722 edition... beautiful i say in almost every way :D:D
Man#3 (in the most childish voice ever): "BAAHAHAHAH I DRIVE AN slr 722 too..... "S"!!!! hahaha
this car has 1 extra letter... annnnd a softtop which makes it less rigid than the coupe...
anyways.... VERY NICE LOOKING CAR... but... its all about that lighting :P

Bow your heads! This thing is badass! The soft top roof was made to be stronger than most metals, so in case you flip at 200+ mph have no fear...As long as the top is up.

no way lol that shiny coat makes it 2-3 times heavier?? damn lol. whats that stuff made out of that makes it so heavy?

This car has always been for the super rich that more money than they know what to do with. Obviously Merc want to extract more sales by creating this version. I bet there will be several of our Dubai, Hollywood and other mega rich friends that'll be queuing to get there hands on one of these. Looks mean though!! What is the price tag of this lady?? I prefer the coupe' 722, as I'm not a Cabriolet/roadster fan. but still, what a car !!!
