Joining the fastback, coupe & estate variants

While so far Renault’s mid-class range has consisted of a fastback Laguna and an estate as well as the brand-new coupé, the currently built 3rd generation – officially revealed in June 2007 – will apparently be completed by an all-new variant: a three-box sedan. We spied the car undergoing break-tests in Switzerland this weekend.

Apart from the three-box layout of the car, another revealing detail is the shape and the placement of the taillights, both of which will be completely different to those of the fastback. Technically the new Laguna sedan will be identical to its fastback and estate brothers, but the rear overhang – and hence the overall length – will grow significantly.

Renault are broadening the range by introducing a third model and follows Ford’s philosophy: the Mondeo, too, is available in fastback, sedan and estate guise.

I imagine they really need this car in order to ramp up sales. I could even imagine an entire facelift, or even the whole range being heavily revised next year because this car just isn't the cash cow they thought it would be. The styling and proportions of the liftback and estate are not unattractive, but the liftback's rear end just looks wrong. My mother has a 1.5 dCi liftback and it has been a nightmare car. The passenger rear door would not lock, water leaked into the electrics so the whole loom has to be replaced (the ESP, ESC, ABS and alarm already has been), so I am unimpressed with this cars performance, styling and reliability

How much do people pay for spyshots of utterly boring cars?

This looks way more dated than the rest of the range.

Sounds like the kind of job for me.

Show me the nearest way to the mountains, I'll be sure to bring my camera-phone for extra-high resolution pictures.

Cheap and big japonized failure. Will be way more expencive than making originally beautiful cars.
