Following an announcement by Nissan, the formidable GT-R which we all thought was a steal at $69,850 isn't quite so much of a steal anymore. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MRSP) has risen to a cool $76,840 for the base model whilst the premium model which includes heated seats, side air bags and an 11-speaker Bose sound system rises from $71,900 up to $79,090.

Neither figure includes the $1000 handling costs or dealer markups but a 10% premium is quite a rise which could even see a slowdown in the demand for the GT-R. Currently 70% of the U.S. allocation is accounted for following the pre-sale program, first deliveries of the vehicle commenced on 7th July and the price increase which has been put down to rise in the cost of raw materials will only affect consumers who purchased the model after the 5th September.

A $7000 increase isn't all that bad, especially when you take into consideration that material and manufacturing costs have indeed gone up. Steel cost has gone up over 60% globally, plastics are up around 30%, carbon fiber manufacturers worldwide have tacked on increases between 10 & 30% (and the GT-R has a lot of carbon fiber for a street car: front & rear diffusers... both of which incorporate undertrays, that massive wing and both driveshafts for example). Not to mention transportation costs will increase due to hikes in fuel prices, fluctuations on the Japanese currency, wage increases... in my opinion it's still a bargain, especially considering the performance it delivers.

yes it still is a bargain, after all Nissan was losing money for every GTR they sell. But I am wondering about your numbers, especially the steel cost how long of a time span is that 60%? I could say steel cost has gone up 6000% if I go back enough years. Also, from what I have been seeing the cost of carbon fiber has been going down as it has become less of a super high end rare commodity.

Well, the 60% figure was quoted to me by someone who works as a commodity manager for a major automotive parts manufacturer, and it's for the last 2 years. You can take that with a grain of salt if you like, but I believed him. You can also check the graph in this story, which shows a 400% increase over the last 6 years:

Also, for a story detailing the manufacturing costs of carbon Fiber:

Both stories ran at the end of July this year. You can do your own research into it if you like.

That's very little for such a great car, its still a steal just hope the V-SPEC doesnt get to pricey.

Most people who got the car already probably paid more than $79K anyways.... Still a nice car, and although the price is not the deal of the century anymore it's still quite decent. But hope the markup can drop a little bit in the future...

Ever wonder why we aren't paying for cars by the pound? How much high tech material is really in these super cars? Is the material really that much more expensive than alternatives or is it priced high because it isn't used that often? Since most development is now done by computer simulation, how much different is the engineering cost of the super car versus the hybrid econo-box? Let's face it, we poor caraholics have been paying for labels, looks and performance far beyond their intrinsic value for too long. This price gouging is the perfect example of corporate greed taking advantage of a stupid market that will shell out big bucks for a car that will be driven at 4/10 95% of the time. Don't believe me, just ask any hot car owner to give you the stats from their on-board computer for the latest MPH average. Other than a few track days, which these cars seldom see, the price paid for this car has no more value than the male enhancement pills that are making millions for the drug companies - or Fanny's Candy Pill Shop.

You cant really say that about this car, because it is already known that Nissan isnt making money on this car yet. They are actually at a loss. R&D costs a lot and also testing it around the world to the extreme conditions.

People with benz's that have over 500 bhp will never use 1/10 of the cars potential because they cant with all the police around. Its about knowing that you have an exclusive car that no one really has. Its about being unique. Its about not just using a boring car to transport u from one place to another. Its about how u feel on the drive. Its about merging on to the freeway and realizing u are already going faster than the traffic before u even get on to the freeway. That is why we pay so much.

Also, everyone has to make lots of money. If no one did make much money then people wouldnt invest their money in these companies. These companies wouldnt have the money to invest in bringing us new things.

I read somewhere that, other than in the US market, the GT-R's been limited to 180km/h (approx 111.9 mph)... can anybody validate this... I'm feeling disappointed about it now.

I think thats only in Japan. The GPS in the car knows when it gets to a track and turnes the limiter off to get to about 193mph.

I honestly think the GTR should be priced closer to 200k plus! ... But in the end the reason they are selling less than 100k is because not everyone knows about GTR hitory. For those people trying to by a super car from Nissan? mmm dont think soo. In the end the car is a steal, to be able to run with the cars that cost twice as much is an amazing feat!
