Maserati’s most exciting car at present – the GT – will soon be given a beautiful sister, and she’ll be walking around topless at times. This prototype of the Maserati Spyder was spotted at the famed Nurburgring and fortunately our spy phototrapher rembered to bring his video camera with him.

Judging from the heavy camouflaged packed onto the car and in par with the brand-new Ferrari California, we reckon the Spider will be given a retractable metal roof rather than a conventional canvas top.

Just like the Ferrari California, the new Maserati Spyder is based on a shortened Maserati GranTurismo coupe platform. The Spyder will receive the same 405hp 4.2-liter Ferrari V8 engine and 6-speed ZF automatic transmission as the coupe.

The Maserati Spyder is expected to launch in 2009.

its a hatch back lol... nahh doesnt this defeat the puropse of the GT, becuase the GT is supposed to be a touring car that seats four... this only seats 2 and im not sure if it will be as good as the original... but i guess we'll just have to wait and see...

When it comes to GTs, most back seats are little more than a grocery shelf. So when the Spyder, you'll just have to put your groceries in the trunk lol.

EDIT: I meant to say "with" instead of "when."

Finally a daily exotic Ferrari driver with a 4/yr 50,000 mile warranty with the first oil change and check up at 12,000 miles or 12 months. Love the sound of that motor everyday on the way home from work. Life could not be better driving a Maserati!
