Volkswagen has a long term plan to become the world's largest automaker and it appears stage one has been completed after the German company overtook Ford to take third place in global vehicle sales rankings.

The VW Group announced that they had sold 3.31 million vehicles in the first six months of 2008 representing an increase of 7.2 percent, it puts them healthily ahead of the their American counterparts who sold 3.22 million vehicles during the same period.

“We are delighted that the Volkswagen Group has made it to the global automobile industry’s top three for the first time. This shows that we are on the right track with our ever-stronger international presence and, above all, our product program. We will systematically push ahead with our growth course even in the present difficult market environment,” Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, commented.

Volkswagen will likely have their sights set on their next target – General Motors. The American giants who until recently had held the number 1 spot announced earlier that they had sold 4.54 million vehicles up to the end of June this year, a drop of 3% compared to the previous year. Toyota's strong position at the top of the table continues with a 2.2% increase to bring total sales to 4.8 million.

mmmm or possibly the sales numbers should be reversed ... the 3rd position change is not a surprise though as VW quality is always streets ahead of Ford at pretty much every price level ... proving again that the cream rises to the top

Audi I think has something to do with it, but I think the majority of their success probably has to do with their new commercial vehicles which are making big inroads in that market.

now we know the exact figure of idiots in this world. 3.31 million to be exact. man i HATE VW with a passion, for the devoid of style cars.

Beautiful, if VW too will change his logo more to heart shape direction. They should look for alliance possibilities for mutual interest.

I wonder how Ford will go when they start selling their European models in the US.

VW will never beat Toyota. They should calm down a little.

Yup 10-15 years ago Audi and volvo were at the same level above toyota below BMW and MB ... And look today Audi is mentioned along with BMW and MB. It truly is an amazing story! Even better for us, now the public has even more to choose from.

Unfortunately It's Ford USA which let the side down. If they were as successful in the US as they are in Europe I would imagine Ford would be much closer to GM and way ahead of VW. As carbonsigma said, it'll be interesting to see what happens when Ford starts sending the Euro models to the states :)

you must be pretty extatic, the first time in how many years that a German automotive manufacturer hit the top 3? Ford has been going downhill for a while now, I am surprised that it took this long for VW to pass them, especially with all its Chinese sales.

Well i heard from some friends that when you drive a VW it feels better than driving Toyota. and nothing is impossible they might sell more than toyota in the coming years. ( For Example did someone imagine that TATA will buy jaguar and land rover one day) so nothing is impossible for companies that work hard

Joe Limon is right...VW should have been in the Top 3 way before now. BTW we should watch Hyundai to become one of the Top 3 in the near future even though i do not like the products per se...
