Scheduled for an official presentation at the 2009 Geneva show, here are two all-new four-door coupés testing at the challenging Nürburgring. Both, the fourth range from Porsche, known as the Panamera, and the all-new Aston Martin Rapide, are developed to be strong competitors to the Mercedes CLS and the future Audi A7.

Though the Panamera takes over design elements from the 911 range, there will be significant differences, too: While the first has always been to keep its rear-mounted boxer engine, the newcomer will have a choice of three front-mounted motors, though set back to the centre of the car as much as possible. The entry-level unit will be Volkswagen’s 3.5-litre six-cylinder unit developing 300 bhp, while Porsche’s own drivetrain will be a direct-injection eight-cylinder petrol engine, available in naturally-aspirated guise (350 bhp) and with twin-turbo (560 bhp).

That should be enough to beat out the competition for a while: Mercedes’ CLS 63 AMG comes up with “only” 514 bhp. However, should Stuttgart make the CLS even stronger, Zuffenhausen would strike back with the Porsche GT’s 700-bhp ten-cylinder unit ...

The target for the Panamera is to be a true sportscar while at the same time it shall be a family-car for every-day use with four full seats, easy access to the rear and a luggage compartment of around 450 litres. When it hits the road in 2009, Porsche hopes to be able to sell 20 000 units annually – and to jump over the barrier of 100 000 sold cars per year.

Yet more exclusive will be the new four-door from England: Following the Rapide Concept shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit back in 2006, Aston Martin is now coming up with the real machine. Former owner Ford had put the project on hold when they decided to sell the biggest pack of shares. After selling this to the group lead by David Richards, one of the first decisions was to revive the project and start developing the production version Rapide. Together with the body, the DB9 will provide its platform and its V12-engine. The latter will be tuned to 480 bhp while it delivers 450 bhp in the DB9. The car is believed to be released in 2010.

"and the all-new Aston Martin Rapide, are developed to be strong competitors to the Mercedes CLS, the brand-new Volkswagen Passat CC and the future Audi A7"

The Passat CC might be a 4-door coupe, but its not in the same league as these more expensive high-performance cars.

Aston ftw. By that I mean the Rapide over the panamera, not the whole range.

i just have to repeat. My god that porsche is ugly. The aston looks fantastic compared to the porsche. Thy really are trashing their image with that car. I dont think ive ever seen anything as ugly that can be taken seriously. Its devostating. Hope everybody who has anything to do with the design gets fired and shipped to siberia or some other horriblw place where they cant ruin anything else i will ever see. I used to love porsche but i just cant now with the panamera, esepcially now when i now you can make a good lookin 4 door coupé. Its heartcrushing and painful

I have to agree I like Porsche but the Panamera is singularly unattractive and looks bloated...I though the 4door coupes were supposed to be sleek & sexy ????

move over porsche, you've had your time, let aston have some glory for the first four door scince the 60's

Not true. There was the Lagonda of the 70s-80s and also some four door versions of the Virage shape appear, albeit as after sale conversions so they didn't have to homologate them.

does the rapide have suicide rear doors like the Rx-8?

August 22, 2008 4:27 PM
Still, the CLS looks better than both.. Mercedes rules when it comes to sedans..

IpsesNipse
August 22, 2008 5:09 PM
I actually dont like the CLS. Rapide is the first 4 door coupe i like at all. Coupes shoult just have 2 doors and leave the 4door thingy to sedans. Aston should patent the 4 door coupe on basis that they are the only ones who can do it right.

that front 3/4 view of the porsche looks like a buick century...a really expensive buick century. leave the "4 door coupes" (sedans) to audi.

The Aston is beautiful, no questions about it. However, when the camo is off, I think the Porsche will look great also (not in the traditional sense that the Aston is). However, I'd put my money on the Porsche around the 'Ring.

yuck! :o) this bulky porsche is disgusting... - on the other hand the aston is a masterpiece of cardesign!

Is the rear end of the Porsche relly going to look the way it does in these spy photos. I just can't believe they would leave the rear end of the car in that deformed state. Apart from the rear end the Porsche looks ok, however the rear end ruins any good the front brings in my opinion. The Aston Martin is what I always thought a 4 door coupe was meant to be, sleek, sporty and sophisticated. The Porsche is just deformed and ugly; what a shame.

Also, does anyone else feel that the Porsche looks more like an avant/estate, rather than a coupe/sedan? I think it looks more like a "wagon" than a coupe/sedan.

Wow, the Pom is looking a lot better than the Kraut at this stage. Stunningly beautiful that Aston, simply a perfected work of art. That Panamera is looking rather ugly. One shouldn't judge from a spy shot but the body shape is that of a toad. Look at that rear end, yuck! Seems the same guy who designed the Cayenne designed this. I think he likes the ladies who carry a bit of extra weight...

let´s face it the AM will never beat the panamera on any track. let´s wait and see till the camouflage comes off. at least porsche created a whole new car whereas AM just produced a 4 door Vantage.

porsche, stick with 2 doors sports car...this is awful!

August 22, 2008 9:47 PM
I don't know about you, but in the only 3 photos where you can see both cars "battling" (?) on the Nurburgring, the Rapide is always ahead of the FUGLY Panamera hahaha... I wonder if it's just a coincidence?

so far the aston wins the beauty contest. we will have to wait and see, but the porsche is butt ugly like it is.

This is the perfect example that these two manufacturers are just using various bits of previous models in order to build their "latest" cars. Why would a smart guy consider to buy one of these two, when he can get the same looks in a much faster car?! There is a serious lack of FRESH IDEAS!

I wont say that Porsche ever made beautiful cars, but for decades they ve always stayed true to their identity through design and mostly performence. Good job not to mess with that. No matter who sees that car will know its a Porsche

wow the rapide looks really beautiful i think its the one of the first 4 doors/coupe that actually looks sexy i hope its not heavy

How much is the Rapide going to be? I heard $400,000 somewhere, though I am PROBABLY wrong... but how is it supposed to compete with the Mercedes CLS? Or shall I say, how is the CLS supposed to compete with the Rapide?

And about the Panamera... people did buy the Cayenne, didn't they? And nothing Porsche can make can be uglier or more blasphemous than the Cayenne! I think this will be a huge hit... very good idea by Porsche... but they shouldn't have made an SUV... that's pushing it. Why can't Porsche do what Aston is doing and just stretch one of their current cars? A stretched 911 Targa would look better than this thing... anyway...

The Rapide gets my choice. In terms of beauty, these two cars a galaxy apart. AM never makes ugly cars.

August 23, 2008 9:30 AM
With the Porsche, it's a 3 in 1. GT3 front with Cayenne middle carrera back. Maybe with a nice set of rims it would look better. In this case my vote is definetely the Aston although I dislike British cars. These carmakers must enjoy their time on the market now because the BMW CS is here in 2010 that will sweep the market in that segment.

August 23, 2008 1:03 PM
The Panamera and Rapide's main competitor will be the Maserati Quatroporte.

Both Aston & Porsche have admitted this.

They are/ will be cars that will satisfy their customers and all will sell well.

im sorry about aston `cause they didnt gave it at least the engine from the dbs, i am so sick of that 6.0L, 400 and some horses. they should make a 600 bhp.. a long time ago they sould've made this. anyway... the aston is very much above the panamera. not to mention that the panamera is in luck that audi gives its engines..specially the v10

August 23, 2008 6:37 PM
That AM is beauty but Porsche is not even a beast.

August 23, 2008 8:00 PM
alessandro i agree with you, the panamera is not even a beast, it´s no less than a MONSTER. just so ugly.

August 24, 2008 7:53 PM
The Aston looks like a sad fish, somehow. The Panamera will rock, undisguised this car will eat anything else on the road, wanna bet? In future, cars won't need gasoline to drive anymore, they will eat other cars...

i have a feeling the porsche will look good when its finally revealed. the aston looks good but they should have done a whole new design rather than just extend the db9.

porsche wins....the ugly battle of course jaja

the Aston looks stunning to me. a gorgeous coupe-limo. and the Porsche... just nothing special.

KayGeeOh
August 25, 2008 11:33 AM
I dont understand how Porsche could make the 911 look so good after so many years of sameness, and then completely go screw up this. Come to think of it, none of the front engined Porsches have been particularly stunning. None that i can recall anyways.

mmr66
August 25, 2008 6:08 PM
the porsche dose have a very ugly back side.

So now we have Mercedes-Benz CLS, Aston Martin Rapide, Audi A7, Porsche Panamera, BMW CS Concept ... damn, it's a whole new segment

August 26, 2008 4:56 PM
I love the beuty and the style of the AM, but does anyone think that the AM is too long? I personally think it was "stretched" a little too much...

And the porche looks like that Chevy MAXX. Anyone ever see that thing?

zzz
August 26, 2008 5:31 PM
yes you're right - porsche actually used the chevy maxx as the benchmark

August 28, 2008 7:57 AM
for some starnge reason i find the porsche closer to that ugly ass model citrouen c6 .that is panamera's true competitor (in ugliness ofcourse)
