The lifespan of the Mercedes A and B class will soon be coming to an end, the poor effort by the automaker in their mid-cycle facelifts was enough evidence to realise that Mercedes had bigger plans for the bottom of their product portfolio.

These plans include a small soft roader which is expected to carry the label BLK, it is due for launch at the end of 2011 and will slot into Mercedes' product line up below the GLK. It will battle against the likes of the BMW X1 and Land Rover LRX in the brand new premium mini-SUV segment. It is also expected Audi will join the party with their rumoured Q3.

Mercedes are currently in discussions with BMW about co-developing the engines which would be used in both the BLK and BMW X1. A range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines are set to be offered, starting from a displacement of 1.6 liters rising to 2.2 liters. Optional four-wheel-drive will be available but the standard model is likely to offer just a front-wheel-drive system.

There is then the decision of what to do with the platforms of the current generation A-class and B-class. Rumours state up to three new models could be launched, one of these is expected to be a three door coupe based on the A class platform and there could even be an electrically powered model in the pipeline.

At least the name is bang on. (BuLK) It is a bit bulky. Othewise nothing wrong with the design but its a bit short compared with the height.

wow that doesnt actually look too bad! the orange coloured rendering on another auto site looked terrible... this just looks like the c class (a very good thing) that made love to a recent ford... kinda has that new ford global language with the streched four corners going on....

... it doesn't actually look that good either ... remove the once (but no longer) classy three pointed star and it becomes a sad love child of the Ford kinetic design and some el cheapo Chinese copy cat wannabe :(

YES!!!!! The Merc lineup should simply be... [C] sedan,[E] sedan coupe convertible(replaceing clk/cls)wagon, [S] sedan and coupe(replacing CL), [M](but built in GERMANY)[G], [SLK], [SL], and the [A] or [B] for Europe. Thats it.

It is a nice car. A lot of light inside, not big too. New A and B series RWD-s will come as well and it will be an interesting rethinking and reordering time in car industry.

This thing has potential. It looks like a mini M-Class. I'm not the biggest fan of the M, but if this car comes in at a reasonable price with good MPG's it might make it. Bluetec? I wonder if it will have a flat bottom like the M-class turning it into a toboggan on snow?

Same sausage different length. What a load of crap this is. Shouldn't Merc spend the time fixing or improving their current line up. Those LEDs lights...where have I seen them before....

If this is the final look, its great! The best-seller would be a BLK 4-matic, with 1.8lt - 200 hp (from e250 cgi) and automatic transmission as standard. An optional air-matic suspension and sport - off road version would be great too. Well done Mercedes! Thumbs up!
