Porsche Boxster Facelift set to Spawn an RS Variant?

Our spy photographer has been patiently sitting on the hill at the side of Nurburgring waiting to see if any of the world's latest prototypes will come bursting around the track. Of course the highly informed professionals knew they didn't have long to wait, as these latest shots show a rather peculiar looking Porsche Boxster.

It is easy to identify the Boxster is the next model to receive the 911 facelift detailing, the revised bumper, headlights and taillights draw evidence to this fact. But what we are most interested in seeing here is the large fixed rear wing poking out the backside instead of the normal small retractable version. This observation leads us to believe the Boxster model could be a prototype for the Boxster RS and forces us to search for more evidence.

The fixed roof featuring a plastic rear window evidently suggests this model wants to reduce weight and the new wheels and carbon ceramic brakes also add fuel to the fire.

The lack of disguise suggests this model is getting close to the end of its development period and with the Paris Motor Show just around the corner, it shouldn't be too long before full official details come out.

awe, now the boxster looks even more like a 911, and that fixed rear wing looks out of place. A retractable one would be so much more appealing.

yea a pop up one would look better like the one in the GT. pops up at higher speeds.

I like it personally, but then again, i love anything Porsche save for the Cayenne, neway. I like the overall shape it looks a bit less round/egg like so thats a good thing IMO. I love the Boxter...it might be lower in power, but M/R is great.

Ahh Porsche! *applause*

Now if they can just get rid of that stain called the Cayenne...

I don't see the sense of having a fixed-roof Boxter RS. Doesn't they already have something called the Cayman?

Like motoriety27 pointed out, I don't see the point of a Boxster with a fixed roof because that's what the Cayman essentially is.

I'm also a bit sceptical about the rumoured 'RS' variant of the Boxster/Cayman - it would put the 911 under too much threat.

This might be like the 911 GT3 & GT3 RS, same engine/horsepower but improved handling and lower curb weight. Another thing, the standard 911 Carrera now makes 345hp with its new Direct Injection engine.

If the Boxster S & Cayman S do get new DI engines, they should at least make 315hp.

If you can't make the car stronger (to keep a gap between the Boxster/Cayman and 911)... maybe you can make it lighter and handle better.

I don't get why Porsche thinks everything has to look like the 911... I have always liked the looks of the Boxter. Seems like it would make more sense to let the Boxter styling evolve then Boxter owners may be more apt to "upgrade" to one of the more exclusive 911 variants down the road.
